Question:

Foot Pronation Help For Skating?

Hey everyone,

I have always had difficulty staying on the flat of my left foot and my ankle seemed to naturally roll inward to my inner edge. I didn't know if this was an issue with my boot (I have hockey skates) or just something I needed to work harder on keeping my ankle straight which I really have to excessively force to stay on a flat or outside edge.

My instructor noted while I was doing some drills that I probably have a foot pronation that causes me to depend on the inner edge, and it is something that doesn't occur in both my feet.

I was just wondering if there was anything anyone would recommend to help my ankle straighten out a bit with this issue? I read some things about heel wedge, arch cookie, or hockey skate footbeds. Would any of these be more strongly recommended?

Thank you so much in advance!

  1. There is such a thing as having your knees/legs/feet naturally turn in. If you are a new skater you will probably find this habbit will go after you skate more/learn more. If your looking to do hockey, I don't really think it matters anyway, hockey skaters usually skate on their inside edges anyway, its just figure skaters who need the diffrence of edges.

    Hope I helped!

You could try and fasten your lases on your boots tighter, and when you are tieing them up keep your feet straight. Hope this helped! xx

  3. Check out Kristi Yamaguchi's books as she has had problems with foot pronation and she does use something inside her boots to reduce the problem but I forget what.  She mentions it in section on  buying skates.

  4. You probably have flat feet and and you need orthotics insoles. I have them and they really helped after i used t hem. Put them in your skates and you will instantly feel the difference.

  5. This is a very common problem with snow skiers who use a "cant" in the boots to align the leg/ankle/foot so it is at a perpendicular alignment to the leg.

The process starts with a foot bed and then wedges under the boot to tilt the leg.
