Question:

Foot burning with SPD pedals.?

After about may be 20 min. or around 3/4th of a mile my foot starts to have a debilitating burning sensation around the balls and arch areas. I know its probably the cleat placement. I have spent hours adjusting these stupid things. I even went to a bike shop and have their critique on things and nothing seems to help. Are there foot stretches I should do?

Its absolutly no fun riding and I hardly do anymore.

  1. As another poster mentioned, you should make sure you aren't over-extending on the downstroke.  Also, your body may not be centered correctly over the pedals so that at the 3 or 9 o'clock positions you could be over extending your foot.  You might want to pay for a proper bike fit.

I was having some troubles at the beginning of this year with my new road shoes.  I  bought a new pair of insoles properly formed to my feet (specialized has 3 different insoles depending on your arch).  My previous long ride (80 miles) I had a lot of foot pain.  With the new arches I rode 100miles last weekend without any foot pain and another 80 the following day.

  2. I had the same problem, it turned out to be tendonitis. I am still able to ride because i made sure my seat and handlebars were adjusted . It sounds like you are over extending your foot when you ride. I sometimes wear my ankle brace. (you can get one from any drug store, just don't get the plain white stretch one)  Good advice from the others...but, you should really see a doctor....good luck

  3. check your screws too! you may have a cleat s***w coming through your sole.

  4. Might not be cleat placement. If your seat is too high you point your toes too much and that causes the same problems. Try riding with a more heel-down posture especially uphill.

Are your shoes stiff enough? They might not be supporting your foot correctly. Also try moving your seat slightly forward so that your knee is directly over your toes when the pedal is horizontal to the front (powerstroke).
