Football Breaking News: Manchester United's goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar tipped to retire
Manchester United's goalkeeping coach, Eric Steele expects the Dutch International, Edwin Van Der Sar to retire by the end of this season.
The 39-year-old legendary goalkeeper has been in the business since 1980s and was part of the golden generation that came out of Ajax. Having gained his experience from clubs like Juventus and Fulham, the shotstopper moved to Old Trafford in 2005.
He has enjoyed the golden period with Red Devils which includes a UEFA Champions League win as well as a hatrick of Premier League titles. The only thing missing is an FA Cup title. However, the goal keeping coach expects Van Der Sar to hang up his gloves
after this season.
"I think Ed has made up his mind that this is his last year. He hasn't won (the FA Cup) and that is a big target for him. He has won most things in the game, there is not much left he hasn't. When we rotate our goalkeepers, I think you will see Mr. Van der
Sar knocking on the door and asking the boss to play in the FA Cup", stated Eric Steele.
However, Steele believes that should Van Der Sar keep his form, there would be no one in the entire outfit willing to let him go and to have with the club beyond his 40th birthday would be beneficial for the Red Devils. Still, with Tomasz Kuszczak
and Ben Amos in line to replace the veteran shot stopper, Steele believes that the time is right to let go of the veteran players and bring in re-inforcements.
In his career so far, Van Der Sar has made over 750 appearances for four different clubs and has made 229 appearances since his arrival at Old Trafford. The player won the UEFA goalkeeper of the year award in 2008 and is one of the most successful goal keepers
of his generation. For the Netherlands national side, Van Der Sar has made over 130 appearances and has the record for the largest number of appearances. He still remains strong and is the first choice for the Red Devils.
