1.SOCCER no WONDER. An estimated 3.5 billion people either watch or play soccer.

2.CRICKET is the next. Everyone would be probably surprised.But, about half of the world's population lives in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.Total cricket fans are 3 to 3.3billion.

You stated most popular, that infers highest number of participants. Sorry to be picky but in this case the number of national federations has little to do with actual popularity.

Therefore, whilst not a worldwide sport, Cricket, (mainly due to being the major sport in India and popular in ex / current Commonwealth countries)  has a huge player base.

China have their own version of Chess, their version could not be included in the figures as it's rarely played outside China, and follows different rules, regulations and pieces.
