Football English Premier League: Roy Hodgson set to become Liverpool manager
After a season full of jeopardy and turmoil the new Liverpool manager is about to be unveiled. Rumours are suggesting that Roy Hodgson is expected to be offered the job.
The manager of Fulham brushed off the chance to wait around till the Football Association agonise over whether or not to give Fabio Capello a second chance following the English World Cup exit. Even after considering removing him from captainship if they had not won the match against Slovenia.
The first order of business for Hodgson would be to administer the offers of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, as a £20 million bid is being offered for the Liverpool captain Gerrard by Real Madrid.
Steven Gerrard had earlier said that he would wait till at least the signing of the new coach at Liverpool and when he has seen that things will proceed in order. Only then will he depart for Bernabeu. Jose Mourinho has been trying to acquire him ever since he was with Chelsea.
From Merseyside their star player Torres is being bid on by Chelsea and they are trying to seal the deal under £60million. The Anfield owners despite the need for skill will go with the deal because of Liverpool’s financial issues with debts that have lead the owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett over £351million.
Hodgson's local rivals, the Blues during his reign at Craven Cottage over a period of two and a half years, believe that an offer of £25million is more than satisfactory to bag Torres.
Liverpool Club, due to the massive debts, earlier promised then manager Rafael Benitez required funds to remake his squad but later told him that he had just £5million. More trouble came for the club that eventually saw Rafael Benitez leave for Inter Milan.
Mostly because of poor management, Liverpool club finished 7th in the League. But their campaign was also tarnished due to bad luck and injuries.
Now that Hogdson is getting the captainship it is thought that he will be met with little excitement from the fans and Kenny Dalglish.
The Board was told by Dalglish that he wanted to have the same role that he discharged in 1991 because of the lack of any strong candidate to join after Rafael Benitez. Now that Benitez had left he was a strong candidate for the job but Dalglish while acquiring the new man for the job revealed that he himself would like the job. Now that complicated the whole matter.
According to a report Marcello Lippi, the former Italian coach has become a candidate for the Liverpool job. Lippi stepped down as the Italian coach after their World Cup fiasco, and has been told that he is one of the top candidates being considered for the Anfield post after Rafael Benitez leaves. Italy faced a first round exit from the World Cup when the defending champions got knocked out by a 3-2 defeat against Slovakia.
In the process Marcello faces heavy competition as Fulham boss Roy Hodgson who has been strongly linked by the press as the favourite to take control in Merseyside with reports he even may be appointed by end of the week.
The scenario can change depending on Fabio Capello's fate. The English coach said that the FA has told him that he will get a decision within two weeks because of the English World Cup defeat.
But if Capello leaves the post Hodgson may take over the English team and this would leave Lippi with Liverpool. But in this triangle will be included Harry Redknapp who is considered by many as the best man to take the position of English manager.
