Football Gender-Bender: NFF files complaint against Equatorial Guinea; accuses
Genoveva Anonma and Salimata Simpore
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has officially filed a complaint against Equatorial Guinea. The complaint made before the African Football Confederation (CAF) accused Equatorial Guinea’s federation of using two men in their
starting eleven squad of the women national team.
Such was reported by Robinson Okosun, a representative of the African Football Confederation, when he called a special press conference to issue a statement that they have taken the case into consideration.
The Nigerian Football Federation is still waiting before making a response to this matter but Equatorial Guinea were very swift in issuing a statement on this pressing – not to mention controversial - matter.
A prominent online newspaper reported the following recently: ‘Equatorial Guinea’s federation denied the accusations against the players, Genoveva Anonma and Salimata Simpore, saying the claims stemmed from an “inferiority complex”
among rival teams because of the team’s recent success.’
The African Women’s Championship (held in South Africa) resulted in Equatorial Guinea finishing in second position in the tournament; they have now qualified to play in the Women’s World Cup that is scheduled to happen in 2011.
What’s interesting is that Nigeria won the 2010 African Women’s Championship and this win came from the last game of the tournament that was between Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria, which resulted in Nigeria coming out victorious
with the score-boards reading four goals to two.
Equatorial Guinea striker Genoveva Anonma, meanwhile, is duly upset by the accusations being hurled her way.
"I first heard these accusations back in 2006 and 2008," she said.
"I have already been (gender) tested, which I find offensive.
“These accusations come because I am fast and strong, but I know that I am definitely a woman!”
