Football League betting preview
As the football season draws to a close, it brings with it wonderful opportunities for backers to latch on to teams who have the need in them.
Does this crazy man know how to construct a sentence? Of course – teams that still have it all to play for come up against sides that will have palm trees and s*x on the beach (the cocktail, obviously) on their minds. It’s time to get greedy and side with the needy.
Take for example Wycombe Wanderers, who are struggling to survive in League One. Last week they travelled to MK Dons, who are stuck in mid-table obscurity, and left with three points thanks to a last-minute winner, the price for an away win was 4-1. The need to achieve the victory meant they kept up the pressure in the final stages and grabbed the winner. The result now gives them a slim chance of survival.
Also, playoff-chasing Blackpool disposed of play-off-assured Nottingham Forest last weekend to keep up their pursuit of sixth place. One team relaxed and the other had to take home three points – there was only ever going to be one winner and at 7-4 the home side no doubt made a lot of punters happy.
This weekend Ian Holloway’s men travel to basement boys Peterborough and the price is nothing special but is a sure thing to put in all accumulators. Gary Johnson has only recently taken over the reins at London Road and has already expressed that he will give a run-out to some of the younger players in the remaining matches in order to assess his squad. The youth-team is obviously not pulling up any trees though, as a young Posh side was thrashed 6-0 at Reading last weekend. Blackpool have a great chance to leapfrog Swansea this weekend with three points and are the banker of the weekend at 1.75.
What do Vauxhall Motors and Gillingham have in common? Both are the only sides in the English football pyramid that have failed to win away from home this season. On that basis this next selection could be so outrageous, it’s actually genius. The Gills are still fighting for their lives towards the base of League One and still need four points from the remaining games to assure their League One status. Surely this is the week to break their away duck, it couldn’t get any harder however as they visit the champions, Norwich City. With the championship all tied up Carrow Road will be the setting for a huge party on Saturday and the players will be hailed as heroes, however they perform. This paves the way for Gillingham to turn the formbook upside down and register an historic victory at 8.00. If you lack the minerals to back a team that are 0/19 away from home, lay the home win at around the 1.45 mark.
Back into the Championship and the battle for survival looks to be going down to the last day with Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday set to clash next weekend. It is paramount this weekend that Palace go into that game with the upper-hand, meaning a positive result is a must against West Brom on Monday, especially if Wednesday can avoid defeat against Cardiff on Saturday. It is easy to forget that before their ten point deduction the Eagles were in fact pushing for a play-off place. The whole club has taken a massive dent with all the shenanigans off the pitch and the arrival of Paul Hart hasn’t helped things. But the squad still possess the quality (bar Victor Moses) they had during their purple patch and beating the Baggies, who have already achieved their promotion, looks a sincere possibility. Palace to win the game at 2.75 looks a profitable path to follow.
