Football League round up – Helguson’s leap of faith keeps R’s top
If Heidar Helguson for some reason ever decides to change sports, then maybe the NBA could be his best option.
Known for his prowess in the air, the Icelandic international defied the laws of gravity to somehow out-jump Crystal Palace goalkeeper Julien Speroni to head home a Tommy Smith cross which give league leaders QPR a 2-1 victory. The result was their eighth win of the season, which pushes them six points clear of second placed Cardiff.
Helguson’s heroics came in the ninetieth minute of an entertaining London derby where Palace looked to have forced a draw after substitute Kieron Cadogan had equalized with one minute remaining. But Rangers under Neil Warnock do not know when they’re beaten, and staged an incredible late rally from which the ‘Ice man’ netted the winner.
Leicester City moved off the bottom of the Championship with a 3-1 victory at the Walkers Stadium against Scunthorpe United. Sven-Goran Eriksson, who is set to take over the managers role today following the departure of Paulo Sousa, was watching on from the stands, and would have been impressed with the attacking prowess the Foxes showed. Martin Waghorn opened the scoring for the hosts before Lloyd Dyer doubled the lead just after half-time, but the second goal seemed to galvanize the visitors. Michael O’Connor got one back with 30 minutes remaining and then a sustained wave of Scunthorpe pressure ensued as Richie Wellens cleared a David Mirfin header off the line, before Franck Moussa made the game safe for Leicester deep into injury time.
Bristol City replace Eriksson’s side at the bottom of the league as they were soundly beaten 3-0 at home by the ever improving Norwich, who now move up to third. The Canaries are now only a point behind Cardiff, who keep up their unbeaten run this season with Craig Bellamy in the side. The Welsh international had missed the last three games with an injury and the Bluebirds’ form had suffered but he got on the score-sheet in their 2-1 win over Barnsley.
Elsewhere, there were some incredible results in League Two. At the Crown Ground, Accrington Stanley beat Gillingham 7-4 whilst Chesterfield came from 4-1 down to register a 5-5 draw with Crewe.
