Football League round-up – Millwall ban pitch invader who chased player
Millwall have handed out a five-year ban to the pitch invader who chased after Watford’s Lloyd Doyley (pictured right) during their hugely surprising 6-1 home defeat on Saturday.
The man, who is reported to be a member of the armed forces, jumped the security barrier at the New Den before chasing Doyley, who evaded the hooligan before Millwall player Neil Harris and stewards dragged the fan away down the tunnel.
The man, who has yet to be named, continued to scuffle with a section of Millwall fans as he was led away, which has resulted in a 41-year-old man being arrested for assault. The club will also file a report to the FA, who are set to investigate the arrests in the latest hooligan incident to involve the Lions.
The game itself ended Millwall’s 17-game unbeaten run at The Den, as the Hornets continued their unbeaten run away from home and moved up to fifth in the league. John Eustace, Jordon Mutch, Marvin Sordell, Adrian Mariappa, Danny Graham and Martin Taylor scored for the visitors with Liam Trotter replying for the home side.
If QPR are to sustain their incredible start to the season, the R’s beat Paulo Sousa’s Leicester City this weekend 2-0 to stay top, they may be sending a letter of thanks to Vatican City for sending the Pope over for a visit. It was 1982 when a Pope last visited, and also was the last time QPR won the First Division. Jamie Mackie once again grabbed the plaudits, netting twice to take his tally for the season to eight already, not bad for a player who cost only £175,000.
Ipswich bounced back from their 3-0 home defeat by the league leaders on Tuesday with a 2-0 success over Cardiff. A comedy own goal from Adam Mathews and a late strike from Jason Scotland moves the Tractor Boys above the Bluebirds into second, who seem to be struggling without the injured Craig Bellamy.
Fourth-place is now occupied by newly promoted Norwich, who continue to quietly go about their business and rise up the table. Grant Holt netted the only goal of the game against Preston in the second period following a clever knock-down from impressive youngster Corry Smith.
