Football News: Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger might enter the transfer market in January
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said that he has resources to spend come the January transfer window. Those that believed that the Frenchman would abide by his rule of staying rather inactive in the midseason transfer period should
think again.
Arsene Wenger has corroborated that the club has the financial cushion to add to its squad. The manager was, however, level-headed enough to add that he would only engage in trade when or if he finds a suitable player that can
bolster the already promising squad.
The contrast in spending has been great this season. The pre season stint saw a couple of Premier League teams go to extraordinary lengths to change things around, spending millions of pounds on bringing fresh blood and a changed
look to the squad – Manchester City and Spurs in the lead. The Gunners, on the other hand, have believed in their ‘honing young talent’ philosophy. Youngsters like Jack Wilshere were handed out first-team starts to make their mark. If any form of injection
were to come in from the external environment, the Frenchman believed that he would have to pass the Arsenal test and should exhibit enough potential and flexibility to fit the Arsenal brand of play.
On addressing the stakeholders at the AGM, Wenger said that the club still had enough money in the bank to buy the services of 1 or 2 players if need be after December.
Justifying his belief in young blood, the Frenchman commented:
“We had some players going out in the summer and we have decided to give confidence to the young players at the Club. Why? Because they have a special culture of playing the game and can integrate very quickly.”
The manager reminded all that the club did reasonably well in the previous transfer market. The period brought in the likes of Sebastien Squillaci, Laurent Koscielny and Marouane Chamakh, who have adjusted reasonably well to life
in North London. They have proved to be fighters and bring a lot to the table individually. Moreover, the trio has also been influential at maintaining the positive team spirit that surrounds the hungry yet trophy-less club. The Arsenal boss believed that
the new signings still had a long way to go and would only improve as the season progresses. Wenger noted that they all exhibited the no-nonsense attitude essential for any team with young players and believed in letting their football do the talking - their
work-rate spoke for itself.
“We made it our aim to keep our group of players together because I feel they meet their needs here. They know they are close to something special. They want to do it and that’s the challenge we have in front of us.”
Those that have monitored Arsenal’s knack of ‘importing’ talent would know about such statements from the longest serving Arsenal manager all too well. The Frenchman has been rather vocal about swooping in for a player if the price
is right; however, it’s been rather hard to see what exactly the Economics degree holder deems as a bargain. Some might argue that he opted to skip class the day they went over the all important economic concept of inflation – in modern times, match-winners
cost money and that has been a rather recurring miscalculation by Wenger.
