Football News: Crawley Town signing former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires
It seems the former legendary winger from France, Robert Pires, is still desirous of prolonging his career. His deal with the Spanish club Villarreal ended this summer and since then he has had time to think about the future.
Now it seems the veteran, who refuses to simply fade away with time, is reported to be joining a Conference National team called Crawley Town. Sources say the 36-year-old player might just join another club yet.
The ex-Arsenal player is a free agent at the moment, after his contract ran out with Villarreal in the summer. It is said that Pires wishes to return to England, a major reason why he is joining an English club. It has also been
reported that he has been training with his former club with the aim of regaining full fitness for future commitments.
Media reports have confirmed that Crawley and Pires are already in talks for a possible signing. It is said that the player will soon be arriving at the club and featuring in their starting line-up before the end of the season.
The club has already signed some good players to ensure another promotion to the upper echelons of football. The new players they have signed include Richard Brodie, Sergio Torres and Matt Tubbs.
If the Pires signing does indeed take place, it will without a doubt be the club’s biggest signing yet in history.
Pires started his early career with Reims and Metz. He later on continued with Metz, from where he was transferred to Marseille in 1998 and played there till 2000.
It was after Marseille that his fame exploded exponentially, when the player joined Arsenal and helped the Gunners reach their top form yet, earning them the ‘Invincible’ title. The forward played for the North Londoners till 2006,
after which he was transferred to Villarreal.
For France too, Pires has had an outstanding career. While he was part of the 1998 World Cup-winning squad, he was also the man to provide David Trezeguet with the pass that won them the Euro 2000 Cup.
He also participated in the Olympics of 1996 but was not deemed fit enough to play in the 2002 World Cup due an injury he had sustained while playing for Arsenal. By Euro 2004, his international career had reached the beginning
of the end after a quarrel with French coach Raymond Domenech.
