Football News: Ferguson hails himself biggest man at Manchester United, Jarvis excluded from English squad
Sir Alex Ferguson held a press conference and announced recently that Wayne Rooney is set to return to action for Manchester United sooner rather than later as the striker has now returned to England after an extensive recovery period
in United States at Nike’s Head Quarters in Portland.
If Rooney does indeed start for Manchester United at the upcoming weekend against Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford, it will be the striker’s first outing for the Red Devils ever since the whole contract saga that unfolded last month. The
ex-Everton man had apparently come out and questioned the club’s ability to attract top players and hinted at his willingness to seek a move away from Manchester. However, in an extraordinary u-turn, Rooney turned on his word in a matter of two days and signed
a new five year contract with Manchester United and in doing so he has now become the club’s highest paid player.
Ferguson spoke about Wayne’s recovery process from his ankle injury as he said, "Wayne has had a good week in Oregon. He's done well. Now, he's back and he will train today (Wednesday). We have to assess if he is ready to get into the
first team. That is an area which I couldn't give you an answer because the only evidence we will have is on the training field and I'll see that tomorrow (Thursday)."
Speaking on the previous incident during which Rooney had made a decision to not extend his contract at Manchester United, Sir Alex added, "The boy rushed in. The minute the response of the public and supporters and press had a say, he
changed his mind immediately because he knew he made a mistake. He immediately apologized and agreed on a new contract in a couple of hours." Ferguson might have welcomed back Rooney with open arms due to his decision to sign a new contract but United’s fans
might not be forgetful.
Fergie as Sir Alex Ferguson is more affectionately known spoke about the relationship between the United faithful and Rooney as he said, "I think the evidence will be on the football pitch. We want to get Wayne to his best. When that happens,
everything will be OK. The minute a footballer becomes more important than a manager, your club is dead. The history of this club goes right down the drain. I am the most important man at Manchester United. It has to be that way. It's one of those situations
when you have to ignore the speculation and what's being said, because it's not something you have any control over.”
On the other hand, Matt Jarvis expressed his disappointment on being left out of the English national team squad after having a splendid month or two with his club side, Wolverhampton Wanderers. He said, "You just want to do everything
you can on the pitch. I just need to keep playing consistently well for Wolves and see what happens."
Mick McCarthy, Wolves’ manager also spoke on Fabio Capello’s decision to exclude Jarvis as he stated, "I felt a little sad for him, especially with the hype beforehand after he'd been named in the provisional squad. All he's got to do
is keep playing and you can force the issue with your performances."
