Football News: Juventus refute any planned bids from Manchester United for Gianluigi Buffon
The General Director (GD) of Juventus Giuseppe Marotta has rebuked all rumours that Manchester United is looking forward to sign in their world class goal keeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Earlier word had broken out that the Red Devils were looking for a glove man after their current goal keeper Edwin Van der Sar’s retirement announcement. That part of the rumour was however true as their legendary Dutch goal keeper will leave the club at
the end of this season or in the next.
This has sent the Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson on a man hunt to look for a new shot stopper. Reportedly the Manchester United manager, Ferguson missed a club match to travel and assess the Atletico Madrid goal keeper David de Gea. The 19 year old
prodigy has continued to impress all footballing spectators and it is predicted that he will certainly land into the greats of the sport.
For United the 32 year old Buffon who has already made the record of being world’s most expensive goal keeper might be the perfect choice. In 2001 Juventus acquired the Italian shot stopper for 32.6 million pounds from Parma. The GD of Juventus, Marotta
has stated that Buffon is going nowhere and will return for play in February this season.
In the FIFA 2010 World Cup Buffon injured his back and had to undergo operation later. Now that he is on the road to recovery it will be the perfect time for a club to bid for the talented player in the January transfer window. Also the player’s price will
be down because he is making a comeback so all cards indicate towards the option of a bid.
For United right the main issue will be to confirm the future of Van der Sar at Old Trafford. The 39 year old player is the only experienced goalkeeper that United have, so although Ferguson has been out scouting for talent and had found Atletico Madrid’s
David de Gea and Aalesunds’ Anders Lindegaard he still needs a leading figure in the department.
Media reports have compiled that Sir Alex Ferguson is planning a move for the Italian international however Marotta has contradicted that. While talking to media he declared, “I deny any negotiation with United. Buffon is a Juventus player.”
On the same issue Silvano Martina, Buffon’s agent, elaborated, “These transfer rumours make no sense. Buffon has been sidelined for three months so who would want an injured player? Moreover, it seems to me that the best player at United so far has been
Van der Sar.”
