Football Player Update: Wayne Rooney all set to sign a new 35 million pound contract with Manchester United
Wayne Rooney is about to signing a mega £35million new deal that will keep him at Manchester United until 2015.
Rooney is currently on holidays after having a disastrous world cup and in a court hearing on Thursday was asked to pay 90,475.25 pounds as ‘restitution remedy’ to Proactive, who had sued for unpaid commission at a Manchester Mercantile Court.
The conclusion of the case has removed a major obstacle that prevented United in offering a new contract to the star forward. Rooney is currently under contract with United until 2012 and earns 90,000 Pounds a week, which is significantly lower than many others in the Premier league, like Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and John Terry, who all earn between 130,000 to 150,000 Pounds per week. With the recent influx of Sheikh Mansour’s Dirhams into Manchester City, it was vital for Manchester United to up the player’s wages.
Rooney’s performance was disappointing at the world cup and failed to score a single goal for his team but United’s manager is hopeful that Rooney will rediscover his form at Old Trafford.
Ferguson said: "I don't expect a hangover, but I think there'll still be disappointment in the lad. I think all the players coming back from the World Cup who didn't do well, who didn't reach their expectations, may feel that they've missed something. But that's because the World Cup's only once every four years”
If Rooney accepts the terms in his new contract, he will become the highest paid player in United’s history earning 130,000 pounds per week.
Manchester United’s chief Executive David Gill is expected to sit down with the striker and his agent to discuss the terms of the contract once the player returns from his holidays in Barbados, with both the player and the club eager to sign the contract as early as possible.
Although Rooney has no intentions of leaving the club and has made it clear on many previous occasions. The club are aware of interest in their star forward from Real Madrid and have identified the need of tying the player into a contract that will reflect how highly they regard the player.
The talks over a new deal were delayed because of the player being busy with the national side at the World Cup and the court case brought against him by his former management company over alleged unpaid commission. But with the case resolved in his favour there are no further hindrances
The deal is likely to be sealed when Rooney and his agent will sit down with the club management when the squad returns from their summer tour of the United States. The negotiations are expected to go swiftly and the announcement is expected to be made before United’s opening Premier League match against Newcastle on the 16th of August.
United originally wanted to settle the issue before the player left for the World Cup fearing that a stellar performance in the World Cup would trigger a high wage demand and with Real already weighing up a 75 million pound offer for the player, it would have made life very difficult for the United management.
But Rooney and his agent gave their assurance that he has no intentions on turning his back like his strike partner Cristiano Ronaldo, did a year ago and both the parties agreed to delay the discussion until after the resolution of the court case.
Under the terms of the new contract Rooney will bag 6.76 million pounds a year, which will amount to 33.8 million pounds over the course of five years with an additional earning from image rights likely to be more than double that figure.
