Football Special Report: Chances of Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League – (Part 1)
If there was one team that has “under achieved” in European competitions, it is definitely the English club, Chelsea. They have never won the UEFA Champions League even though they have such a strong side.
Chelsea was never a great football club in the history of football and they were always a side that was fighting relegation zone or was not even close to being the “favourites” for being in the “top 4,” the four teams which were the favourites in the English
Premier League to be crowned local champions.
The four teams definitely included the three stronger sides, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. These three teams were usually the favourites to win the English League but after Roman Abrahomvic’s takeover of the English club, “the blues” changed
altogether. The team managed to buy a lot of good players just like Manchester City of these days. Moreover, Chelsea also managed to become one of the toughest teams in the world and they also came out on top during the Premier League.
Later, “the blues” brought in “the special one” Jose Mourinho to their side and it was the Portuguese coach who had helped the underdogs Portuguese Club Porto, win the UEFA Champions League. The Portuguese side were not even the favourites for winning the
European title but with the help of Jose Mourinho they managed to reach, the final and they won the title.
Later, the special one joined the English side Chelsea. Chelsea looked to be a very strong side after Jose Mourinho joined them and the Portuguese coach imported a lot of players to help the team win matches. Under Jose Mourinho, the blues managed to win
their first ever English Premier League title and the English side managed to accomplish it twice in a row and became one of the strongest sides in the Premier League.
Later, Chelsea managed to make a permanent spot in the special top 4 as the Merseyside club Liverpool was left on the 7th spot. The 18 times champions, Liverpool were struggling down the league table, while Chelsea and Manchester United were the
two sides who competed for the Premier League title. Arsenal were left down on the third spot, giving no competition to the top 2.
Despite the fact that the English Premier League was a two horse race, it was simply evident that all the teams were looking to be strong and gave a tough time to the top 4. After Mourinho’s departure, Chelsea managed to reach the UEFA Champions League final
in which they had to face their local rivals Manchester United.
The match was simply a thriller as two of the best English sides collided for European glory. The best of the best African players on Chelsea’s side, Didier Drogba got a red card during the match and the blues lost the game on penalties while Manchester
United were the ones who managed to win the European cup again in 2008.
Chelsea are a side who always look to be strong in the European tournament, but they always suffer something from bad luck. During the UEFA Champions League 2009, Chelsea managed to reach the semi finals and they faced the Spanish side Barcelona.
The match was simply a stunner as both these teams first collided at the Nou Camp in Barcelona. Chelsea held the hosts and didn’t let them score a single goal even though the Spanish La Liga leaders were very strong at home.
Later, the match became more exciting but ended in a goalless draw. When the Spanish side visited Stamford Bridge in England, it was expected that they were going to try to defend rather than play attacking football. However, that did not happen and both
the teams tried their best to score a goal against each other.
