Football Special Report: Chelsea to get back to winning ways
Chelsea's season has gone from bad to worse in the last one and a half month after they have won just one of their last seven outings. They are presently ranked fourth in the Premier League standings and were recently robbed of their clean slate in the Champions'
League.
Chelsea’s draw with Tottenham showed they were back to their best as they looked confident and just missed out on a win had Drogba scored from spot-kick. They are presently a point behind Arsenal and Manchester City and three points behind current league
leaders Manchester United.
Chelsea's talismanic Ivorian hit man has seen a slump in form over the past one and a half months. Chelsea have failed to find fire-power as Drogba lost form and his goals dried up. His blistering form in front of the goal last season helped Chelsea to be
crowned Premier League champions. If Ancelotti's "Blue Boys" are to retain their crown then it is important for Drogba to get back his form.
Drogba looked pretty dangerous in the past weekend's match against the Spurs' and scored the equalizer for Chelsea before failing a penalty shot. Everyone will be hoping that Drogba gets back to his old form as it will help Chelsea see-off a tough December
fixture and keep them in course for the title.
Chelsea's two important players - John Terry and Frank Lampard were sidelined with injuries. Their loss was severely felt as Chelsea failed to score goals and avoid opponents scoring goals that cost them valuable points as well as the top spot. With Captain
John Terry looking confident and fully recovered and Lampard also getting back into action, Chelsea looked their old-self on Sunday.
The fitness of these two players is very important for the club's success as was proved during their absence. So if Chelsea can keep their key duo fit, the Blues' will be able to recover from their slump easily and get back in the race to defend their title.
Chelsea's recent slump in form has been largely blamed to their small squad. Last season's Premier League champions in their efforts to balance their books have sold out and let go a number of their experienced veterans with only a few new signings.
Carlo Ancelotti is adamant that squad at his disposal is sufficient to defend Premier League crown and win the elusive Champions League. But as it chalks out, the Italian has felt the need for experienced players. Injuries to experienced first-team regulars
John Terry, Frank Lampard and Alex threw the team into a crisis mode and they are yet to recover fully from the slump. Ancelotti has to make some new signings if Chelsea are to defend their title as well as fight for the coveted Champions League.
It is reported that club owner Abramovich has approved huge transfer funds to reinforce the squad. That should mean that January will see Chelsea back to their buying sprees as they look to strengthen their squad for the last part of the season.
If Chelsea are to get back on track, the players will have to start increasing their chances-to-convert ratio. A fully functional Chelsea attack will definitely bolster their chances to retain their trophy.
Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League, being three points behind leaders Manchester United having played a match more. They have perfect opportunity to kick-start their season against United on Sunday and lay down a marker for other teams.
