Football Special Report: Gerrard Pique says beware of an Angry Rooney
Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney’s former team mate Gerrard Pique has suggested that Rooney will definitely hit top form once the season starts, and will most probably guide his team to the title.
Pique, who moved to Barcelona from old Trafford says that he knows Rooney very well, the Spanish world cup winning defender said that Rooney is a very competitive man, and following a bad world cup with England, he would make sure he makes up for it for his club.
Pique said that it is not only the disastrous world cup campaign of England but Rooney’s own performance in the mega event that would have hurt him the most. He said that a player like Rooney never accepts defeat and sets very high standards for himself.
He added that the fact that England crashed out so badly in the world cup may work in favour of Manchester United. He said that Rooney will make sure that gets back the respect in the football fraternity.
The Barca Defender said that he has never played with a man who is so dedicated and committed to the game, he said that he would do all he can to hit his top form right from the start of the season.
He said that normally there are players who are more worried about the pay checks and the bonuses from the club, but Rooney is one player who cares more about the team winning and most of all his fans. He feels that he let the whole country down in the world cup and is ever more determined to make it right.
While reflecting back on his time at Manchester United, Pique said that whenever we lost match, the whole team made sure that they stayed away from Rooney in the dressing room, he takes defeat too seriously.
He went on to say that normally following a defeat the players cooled off during the weekend but not Wayne; he used to come to training on Monday with even more intensity. Moreover, he thinks the same thing will happen once the season starts in August.
Pique, who shared a great friendship with Rooney during his time at Manchester United, said that he knows the Striker would be hurting deeply even during his time off from football and would be itching to get back. He said Rooney is a sort of player who can turn his anger into title winning form for his club, and that is precisely what may happen.
Wayne Rooney was introduced to the world in Euro 2004 and since then many clubs were after him but he chose Manchester United. Pique said even now he knows that several big names including Real Madrid are looking to sign him but he said that he is 100 % sure that Rooney does not want to leave old Trafford.
The world cup winning Spanish defender said that Wayne and Sir Alex share an amazing relationship; he said that Alex treats him like a son and Rooney also respects and treats him as a Father figure. Rooney when came to United was raw and short tempered. Sir Alex has worked hard on him and calmed him down.
In the last season, Wayne Rooney was in stupendous form and carried Manchester United on his own shoulders for the first half of the season. As soon as he got injured, things started to go wrong for United and they lost Champions League semi quarter final and also the League title decider against Chelsea. If the Striker can keep himself fit for the entire season, Manchester United may have a great chance of regaining the Premier League title.
