Football Special Report: Howard Webb and his ‘affection’ for Manchester United - Part 2
Man United 3 Man City 1, January 27, 2010
Howard Webb returned to Old Trafford to take charge of another high profile fixture in the city derby but this time, it was in the Carling Cup.
United scored their third goal of the game and what turned out to be the eventual winner on aggregate in highly controversial circumstances. Wayne Rooney latched onto a perfectly timed pass from the midfield and the replays showed that the striker was in
an offside position when he received the ball but Webb failed to spot that.
Moreover, Webb also failed to give Ferdinand his marching orders in the game when the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 centre back brought down Carlos Tevez just on the edge of the box. But, it was still very early in the game and Webb can be forgiven for not brandishing a red with
only 24 minutes played.
However, the decision turned out to be a pivotal one as United went on to win the game by 3-1. The newspapers the following day lambasted Webb for his failure to dismiss http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rio-Ferdinand-c31173 but it was already too late by then.
Man United 2 Liverpool 1, March 21, 2010
Another high profile encounter at the Theatre of Dream and another high profile error by Webb allows Manchester United a passage back into the game.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 proved too hot to handle for Nemenja Vidic when he raced on to the ball before slotting easily past Edwin Van der Sar but the game was turned on his head when in the 19th minute, Webb gave Manchester United a soft penalty as Javier
Mascherano brought down http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Antonio-Valencia-c6345 on the edge of the box.
Despite the incident occurring on the edge of the box, Webb awarded the penalty to the home side adjudging that the impact was inside the box. United equalized from the spot and then went on to win the game with another goal by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 later.
Man United 3 Liverpool 2, September 19, 2010
This time, it was the visiting side that benefited from two dubious decisions by the referee. Liverpool’s two goals were scored by two players who appeared blatantly offside. Sir Alex Ferguson said after the game that Liverpool did not offer anything going
forward in the game and still found a way back curtsey two errors by the referee.
But, it was not only the visitors who benefited from refereeing errors in the game as United also got the rub of the green when Howard Webb did not dismiss John O’Shea after the defender brought down Torres on the edge of the box. The Spaniard had appeared
through on goal and John was the last defender.
Man United 1 Arsenal 0, December 13, 2010
Howard Webb’s trusted assistant David Cann is not able to officiate in the game as he was sick and Dave Bryan took the responsibility of being the linesman in the game. It made no difference as Bryan awarded United a penalty after Gael Clichy was adjudged
by the linesman to have handled the ball in the box.
The replays clearly showed that the left back’s hand ball was non-existent but the decision by the linesman was rubberstamped Webb only for the ultimate justice to be served when Rooney blazed the ball over the bar.
United still went on to win the match by a goal from Park Ji Sung.

Webb’s most recent error at Old Trafford was on last Sunday when he awarded Manchester United a penalty. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dimitar-Berbatov-c11254 in the box but the replays clearly showed that there was simply no or
minimal contact in the box.
United scored from the spot kick for what turned out to be the winning goal of the game.
