Football Special Report: In defence of Alex Ferguson
The dunderheaded idiocy of the media these days is just mind boggling to say the least. For one season, United failed to win the title and the fingers are already being pointed at Alex Ferguson, perhaps such is life in football management. Ferguson is now even being blamed for the Glazer takeover in 2005 by some sections of the media.
It is being claimed in the media how one man could have stopped the Glazer take over and failed to do so.
The point being raised is that Ferguson could have threatened with his resignation and the banks would have not financed the deal had he done so. The refusal to be part of the plan by such an influential, decorated and respected manager would have dented the business plan for sure.
If you look at the things perceptively, Fergie only had two choices:
Resign and let the club be doomed. (Under new management and new owners, United would have not survived and would not have won the premier League 3 times in a row and for sure would not still be making profits despite being in a huge debt.)
Betray the trust of the fans at that time and repay their faith back later with three titles in a row and a Champions League crown.
Any sane man would settle for option number two and so did Fergie, then how is he wrong? After all, he is just a champagne socialist.
This is a transitional period for United and there are no two opinions about it. However, such is the bandwagon of glory hunting United fans that they start demanding the head of the manager if he doesn’t win the league for one season. It is simply stupid and the reason why so many United fans are being laughed at by the world. After all no real fan is demanding such things and understands the game much better than these glory hunters.
Many fans complain that why are United not spending big in the transfer market and where did the 80 million of Ronaldo deal go. Sneijder only cost 13 million to Inter but did United need him last year? No, they did not. In addition, Real would have never sold Sneijder to United after United made them wait for so long to complete the Ronaldo switch. So no, Fergie didn’t even miss a trick there. As far as Benzema is concerned, no one could have predicted the legal hag up that is now attached to deal, so Fergie isn’t even wrong there. He has done all he can and to the best interest of the club.
Ferguson has been in business for more than 35 years now and have spent 26 of those at this club and surely knows better than a few glory hunting fans, so please cut the old man some slack. He knows better than anyone and if he thought, there is someone out there in the market who can transform the team; he would’ve signed the player in an instant.
Ferguson is the best manager United have had in their history and is wise enough not to indulge in the transfer market this season either, be it for the inflated prices or the lack of sheer talent in the market.
United surely, need reinforcements in a few departments on the pitch but there are not many players that are available and after a 32 million pound blunder, he is thinking twice before making any move and he cannot be blamed for that.
The old man knows what he is doing and while this may be another transitional year in United’s history, he sure will bounce back with a title or two before he decides to call it a day.
