Football Special Report: Liverpool’s Christmas shopping list (Part 1)
A lot has been said about http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809’s performances this season, some have laid the bulk of the criticism on manager Roy Hodgson, and others are still pointing fingers at the previous regime for failing to support former manager, Rafa Benitez, in the transfer
market.
However, the clear fact for everyone to see is that Liverpool’s squad is certainly not top notch. Apart from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-Reina-c29672, there are plenty of average and below average players in the squad. Liverpool doesn’t only lack strength
in depth but they need top players in the starting eleven to compete against the likes of Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Arsenal.
The intentions and aspirations of NESV will be tested in the upcoming transfer window. Should they back manager Roy Hodgson with plenty of finances then there will be plenty of optimism for the future. However, if Liverpool fail to make any mark in the upcoming
window – when the desperately need at least 3 top players – fans will lose faith in their new owners.
Bettor.com has decided to draw up a shopping list for Liverpool owners. The list includes players we believe are realistic options for Liverpool. Most of these players have been linked with Liverpool in the past. We will discuss different positions NESV
need to splash their cash on.
Goal Keeper
This is one area Liverpool is blessed with a top class goal keeper. In the summer, they also signed a back to Pepe Reina when Brad Jones arrived from Middlesbrough. However, there have been rumours that Reina might decide to leave the Anfield club, if the
new owners failed to match his ambitions. It is therefore imperative that NESV show serious intent in January, to keep the likes of Pepe at the club.
In case he decides to leave as soon as January – which is highly unlikely – a deal for Manchester City’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-de-Gea-c10463 and Schalke’s
Neuer.
Defence
Where should one start from? Liverpool’s defence certainly needs a major overhauling. In the absence of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-Agger-c9884, Liverpool’s defence looks no better than some of the teams near the drop zone.
Martin Skrtel seems to be committing the same mistakes over and over again. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sotirios-Kyrgiakos-c33831 is a decent option against teams like Stoke but against a footballing side, he has failed more often than not.
A centre back has to be a priority going into the January transfer window. Loads of centre backs from across the continent have been linked with Liverpool since the injury to Jamie Carragher was revealed to be a serious one.
Philippe Mexes has been one of the names mooted and what we have seen over the years, he is a decent Centre back and around £10m, he represents an experienced and cheap option. However, a player who turns 29 in March next year does not sit well with new
owner’s policy of ‘buying young’.
Others to be linked with Liverpool include Bolton’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Cahill-c14439 and Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott. The former has also been a target of Chelsea and he might just prove to be out of Liverpool’s price range. He is valued at around £20m by Bolton. As for
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Joleon-Lescott-c18941, a loan deal until the end of the season would be a more viable option. He cost City £24m and they would be reluctant to let him go for less than half that amount - which is what Liverpool would be looking to pay.
However, Cahill could be an ideal signing, given that he is young, quick, proven in Premier League and is English as well – a kind of marquee signing Liverpool needs.
