Football Special Report: News from all the Barclays Premier League Clubs after the Weekend (Part 5)
(Continued from part 4)
West Ham United:
The Hammers under fire manager, Avram Grant confessed that his side were second best as they went down 2-1 at home to Newcastle United.
He said: "I think we didn't push so much, didn't pressure them, gave them too much space and we gave a lot of ball away too." Next week's match at the Emirates is followed by a trip to Birmingham, who has only lost once at home in a year. Grant admits
his task has become harder because of their latest loss but insists he is the man to turn the club's fortunes around. He continued: "It's harder for us to get out of the relegation zone now but there are almost 30 games left and we have games in the next two
months that we can win. If we do well like we did up until now with the five-match unbeaten run we had then I'm sure we can do it."
Wigan Athletic FC
Wigan Athletic manager was dissatisfied, as his side could not hold onto their advantage in the 1-1 draw at home to Bolton but took pride in a fourth Barclays Premier League match unbeaten.
Roberto Martinez said: "The start of the derby was a little bit up in the air. There was not too much quality, a lot of passion in the first 20 minutes. The last 25 minutes in the first half we finished really strong and you could see the goal was coming.
I was extremely proud of the second-half performance. You're starting to see really good combinations. The team is starting to gel together and that's really pleasing."
Wolverhampton Wanderers:
Wolves’ manager McCarthy sensed that his side should have got on the score sheet but was full of admiration for the Barclays Premier League leaders after his side's brave 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.
Mick McCarthy said: "I think we should have scored which may well have given us something out of it. We had the best two chances prior to them scoring. It was certainly a good performance. I think Chelsea are the best team in the league in my opinion.
They have got loads of ability and pace and one of the best goalkeepers in the league. They are physically tough and clever. They trust people with the ball and they are a fantastic team. We should have scored against them but we didn't."
