Football Special Report: Player Profile – Gerard Pique (Part 2)
Gerard Pique was the key factor in the game against Germany, as he kept on denying the European giants whenever they became a threat to the Spaniards. Later, in the final match of the FIFA World Cup 2010, he managed to take care of the Dutch attack. Dutch brought a very good attacking team with Robin Van Persie, Van der Vaart, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder included in the squad. It was definitely hard to deny such an attack, but Gerard Pique and company easily denied such amazing players and won the title, as his fellow Barcelona player Andres Iniesta managed to score a goal for his country and won it for the Spaniards for the first time in the history of the game. It was because of Gerard Pique, and the other defenders that Spanish team managed to win the FIFA World Cup 2010 and they managed to put their names in the history books.
As Carlos Puyol is the heart of the defensive lines in the Nou Camp, Pique has emerged with a different identity in his defensive role. With Puyol being the beating heart of his club, Pique has managed to change a few things in the defensive role as the Spaniard has a different style of play and it is different from the usual central defenders. He regularly springs long passes and adds to the attack of Barcelona with his amazing pace on the field. As Gerard Pique moves forward to help the team with its momentum, he helps the “amazing” master mind Xavi Hernandez, as he is free to pull the strings of the game. In such a young age, the central defender has shown maturity and he has shown that he can easily be a leader of the defensive lines in the centre of the 18 yard box. Just because of his maturity and because of his flawless campaign with Barcelona, he has been able to write his name in the club’s greatest defenders, namely; Koeman Nadal, Abelardo and of course the captain of the Blaugrana club, Carlos Puyol.
Under the former Barcelona player, Pep Guardiola, Barcelona were able to dominate Europe and showed their potential against all the teams, as they kept on producing talented and gifted footballers. However, Pique managed to cultivate in England even though he was born in Spain. He returned to Spain and was welcomed by Barcelona, as the former Manchester United defender decided to come back home. He showed the world that he could perform in both the countries and proved it at many points of time.
After Pique’s return, the centre back Gabirel Milito got less of a chance to play for the Spanish side and Pique took his position in the centre. Not only did he manage to take Milito’s place, the Argentinean’s replacement, Rafael Marquez was also given no chance in the first team, as Pique marched towards the first team spot. Pique became a part of the first team in no time and managed to win three titles during his first season and then along with amazing players like Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniseta, Sameul Eto’o and the amazing Argentinean winger Lionel Messi, Pique managed to bag himself a lot of titles with the Catalan Giants. Barcelona managed to win 6 cups in the same year as they were simply unstoppable during their run in the Spanish League, the FIFA Club World Cup and also the UEFA Champions League.
With all his medals and then the FIFA World Cup medal as well, Pique managed to achieve that many footballers can only dream of achieving. It has been an amazing season for Pique, as he has managed to win all the titles that he can be a part of, except the Euro Cup which he plans on winning in 2012, as Spaniards are on their way to win it for the second time in a row.
