Football Special Report: Player Profile Luis Suarez
The transfer deadline is fast approaching and the pressure is ever increasing on United’s long serving manager to sign more players to add more fire power to his squad. All of this is being done in order to present a more sustainable challenge to win the premier league trophy next season.
Although United have already added Mexican Javier Hernandez and Portuguese Bebe to their squad but both the players are still very young and in the very early stages of their careers and cannot be depended up to lead the United attack on their shoulder’s alone.
United need a proven goal scorer in Europe, who can get Sir Alex’s side goals week in week out. Someone who can also play in the whole, behind the striker and can hold up the ball.
All these can be seen as Dimitar Berbatov’s qualities but the Bulgarian failed to deliver last season and United cannot afford to make the same mistake twice.
Therefore, in today’s inflated market where would Sir Alex find a reliable goal scorer that can guarantee him 20 goals a season, and the Answer is Luis Suarez of Ajax Amsterdam.
Born on the 24th of January 1987, Suarez is Salto Uruguay, Suarez is a highly rated international striker who has a proven goal record in the Dutch Eredivisie, his full name is Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz, which would please the United fans who would want to put that name on a replica shirt.
Suarez started his career in his home country Uruguay with club Nacional du football scoring a staggering 12 times in 29 appearances.
At the tender age of 19, Suarez was raising an eyebrow or two in Europe and when Groningen came calling the striker jumped on the opportunity, he was sold for a measly 800000 Euros but who knew then that the prodigal son of Uruguay would one day become one of the most lethal sharpshooters in the world of football. He scored another 10 times for his side in 29 appearances and his performances were noted all across Europe but the striker chose to stay in Holland and signed for Ajax for a paltry fee of 7.5 million Euros.
He won the accolade for the Dutch footballer of the year and slammed a stunning 35 league goals in 33 outings (49 in all competitions) and his current tally for the Godenzonen stands at an amazing 74 strikes in just 97 appearances.
Suarez was promoted to the status of a club captain taking over from the Belgian international Thomas Vermalen, who moved to London to play for Arsenal.
Like all other hot in for strikers, Suarez also had a hot head on his shoulder and is famous for his flaring temper and has amassed almost as many yellows as he has goals and was also sent off on his international debut against Colombia, which his side won 3-1.
There is a long list of clubs that are interested in the lanky striker including Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. The spurs even made an inquiry about him recently only to be brushed off by the manager Martin Jol saying they can’t afford the Uruguayan and he will only move if one of the biggest clubs in the world come calling.
Luis Suarez just signed a one year contract extension in January this year which will keep him at the Amsterdam Arena until 2013, says that he is happy at the club, and is there to stay.
Suarez scored a stunning 6 goals in the Dutch Cup fourth round match against Wezep but one can only say it was more a mismatch than a match, as the Amsterdam side won by only the narrowest of margins, 14-1.
