Football Special Report: Premier League Player Ratings- West Brom vs. Newcastle (Part 1)
West Brom hosted Newcastle United on Sunday at Lunch time kick-off. West Brom desperately needed to get back to winning ways after falling apart in the last month or so. Newcastle on the other hand have Andy Carroll to thank for steadying their ship this
season. However, it was West Brom who ran out eventual winners with a 3-1 score line.
Bettor.com has giving player ratings for this match after analysing each player’s performance during the match.
WEST BROM
Scott Carson: 6.5
Had little to do in the first half when Newcastle failed to get enough of the ball to trouble him. However, he made some fine saves in the 2nd half in particularly the one from Taylor and then another from Lovenkrand that denied them an equaliser.
Gonzalo Jara Reyes: 5.5
A tale of two half’s for the young centre back. He looked assured during the first 45 minutes when he kept Gutierrez quiet. However, it all changed in the second period as the Argentine ran all over him and gave him a torrid time.
Paul Scharner: 7.0
The first player who has successfully kept the Newcastle hitman, Andy Carroll, quiet for most part of the game. Scharner also had his say when going forwards. Had he matched his brilliantly timed run with the volley at the end of it, he might have been celebrating
his first league for his new club.
Gabriel Sebastian Tamas: 6.0
Did a solid job alongside Scharner and ensured that Newcastle’s approach of lunging balls forward came to no avail. He was comfortable for most parts of the game until Loverkrand’s pace caused him a few problems in the second half.
Marek Cech: 5.5
Cech got his chance in the absence of Nicky Shorey and he failed to make any serious impression. He lost out to Wayne Routledge more often than not. His most notable contributions were first to clear a rebound from a Paul Scharner tackle and then more importantly
released Peter Odemwingie with a delightful through ball.
Somen Tchoyi: 7.0
He was superb in the first half in particular. Gave Enrique all sorts of problems and found spaces in the Newcastle defence. His curled effort was worthy of winning any match but his strike set West Brom on their way to 3 points.
Graham Dorrans: 6.5
One of the stars of their promotion campaign last year, Dorrans has failed to hold down a regular place in the starting eleven. However, he was neat in his play alongside Brunt and showed some game awareness with clever off the ball movement.
James Morrison: 6.5
Morrison put in a great shift last night. His industriousness in the midfield was key to the match. He isn’t the best when it comes to natural ability but he worked his socks off for the sake of his team.
Chris Brunt: 7.0
One of the stars of West Brom’s season so far, Brunt gave his usual classy midfield performance. He dictated the term of the play and sprayed passes all over. He also notched up an assist for Tchoyi’s goal.
Jerome Thomas: 6.0
The skilful winger was at Simpson throughout his time on the pitch and skinned him on more than one occasion. His dive meant he received a needless yellow card and eventually his rating dropped.
Peter Odemwingie: 7.5
He was back to his best and showed his early season form. He ran from the half way line to make it 2-0. He then broke the offside trap to run past Krul and slot the ball home in the 89th minute to settle the home side’s nerves. He was full of
running and made some really good runs as well.
SUBSTITUTES:
Giles Barnes: 6.0
Brought on for Thomas in the 77th minute and he did as much as he could have during his time on the pitch.
Steven Reid: N/A
He was used as a time wasting exercise.
