Football Special Report: Ryan Giggs says he was petrified by Coach Ferguson during the early years of his career
One of the all time legends at Manchester United, Ryan Giggs has said that even though he has spent 2 decades at Old Trafford, he is still petrified by Ferguson. He said now things actually are not like they were during his first 10 years, when actually tried to avoid the boss as much as he could.
The 36 year old former Wales Captain said that nowadays it’s a different story, and the manager is no longer the aggressive scary man he used to be. He said that age has made him mellow down, and now he in fact looks to senior players for advice.
Giggs while talking to a British newspaper said that, Ferguson has changed in last few years and the young players coming into the club have it easy. He said that when the so called golden generation of Scholes, Neville brothers and David Beckham were coming through, he was like a military colonel. The left winger said that the fact that he not as strict as he used to be, does not mean that he has lost any hunger or drive for the game. Giggs said that if anything, it has actually grown with every year. He said that when they were kids making their way in the team, one of the basic things Ferguson told them was that winning is a habit and one should get used to it as soon as possible. So that is the way he does it, Giggs said over the last 2 decades or so, that he has been at the club, he has had success like no one and so he is addicted to it and all he wants is more. Which he said is obviously great for the club.
Ryan Giggs, who scored his 156th goal for United on the first weekend of the new season, said that, talking about his personal terms with the manager. It has changed a lot in last 10 years. Giggs said at first there was fear, later it became respect and now it’s a lot more than that. He said that after spending so much time with Ferguson over the years, he almost knows what the boss is thinking. He said that he takes the senior men in the team in his confidence, while making big decisions regarding a match or signing a player. Giggs said that he has learned a lot from the manager and he is one of the biggest reasons he never left the club despite numerous offers over the last 2 decades.
Ryan Giggs has become the man to play most number of games for Manchester United, and still is showing no signs of slowing down. In his last appearance against Newcastle, the veteran looked as fit as an ox, with no extra body fat visible on his 36 year old body. Giggs said that at this age, not many continue to play, but he said he is playing because he knows he can still do it on a personal level and also can help out the manager and the team. He said at 36, one can never say when would be his last game that is why he cherishes every game and every goal.
The former Wales international is the most decorated player in the English Premier League and on Saturday became the first and only player to score in 19 consecutive premier League seasons.
