Football Special Report: The Debate on David Beckham
During the pre-match interview before a friendly match between England and Hungary, the Italian boss called time on David Beckham’s international career.
Beckham has had a long career spanning up to fourteen years, with seventeen goals and a hundred and fifteen international appearances.
It is possible Beckham has already played his last match without even realizing it and it is unclear if Capello will give him a farewell match or not.
Capello gave his views on Beckham and said that David is getting a bit too old to be thinking of playing in the next World Cup or in any other international tournament.
Nevertheless, it is believed to be a good thing that Capello is looking so way into the future.
The Hungary match show casted Joe Hart, Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere and Adam Johnson and these seem like the players that can be the instruments with which ‘the Three lions’ will come out flying in the future.
The fair thing would be to look at England’s past, as even though they had such a disastrous and humiliating World Cup, they still have had a lot of success in the past.
Capello has always been resolute on the matter that he would never just close the door on some one’s international career, without any prior warning or commitment.
When rumours were constantly flying about for Michael Owen, Capello assured Beckham that the door was always open for him. Capello’s rule before was that, whoever plays good enough to be picked for the national team will be picked!
People argue that the same criteria should apply for David Beckham and Capello should give him a chance.
Most fans argue that age should not matter, if someone plays well enough to be picked, then he should be picked but things remain to unwind as Beckham recovers from his last injury.
England has a distinct lack of pace; Beckham has 115 caps and never used to get selected because of his pace.
Beckham offers a range of abilities from exceptional passing; he has amazing dead ball skills.
The fact is that Beckham is 35 and by the 2012 European Championship, he will be 37 so it is still unclear what Capello plans to do.
If Cappello is serious about sticking to his word for giving youngsters a chance to play and Capello has already told everyone that he feels that, the young team is ready to play and shine.
Another argument is that Beckham will only be 37 at the time of the European Championships and Capello just took the thirty nine year old David James with him in the World Cup squad.
The Legend, Stanley Matthews played for England ever at the age of 42 and till the age of fifty still gave performances worthy of international plays.
Another issue was Capello’s way of breaking the news to Beckham, now David is one of England’s most beloved players, he was the team’s captain and he even was part of the coaching team during the World Cup.
Beckham had to find out about this news shortly before the interview was aired on television and had no prior warning or indications of such a plan.
It is confusing that why Capello didn’t break the news to him personally. Another question that comes to mind is about Beckham getting a farewell match.
From the past, we see that there have been others that really deserved a farewell match and still did not get one. This list includes Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Peter Shilton and Billy Wright.
Still David Beckham is a loved Personality and to most, he has already become a Football legend.
