Football Special Report: Things we learnt from Barcelona’s recent form (Part 2)
Lionel Messi was also the turning point during the UEFA Champions League 2009, when Barcelona were the side that won everything. They entered six competitions during that year and they did not lose a single trophy and won all the gold that was achievable
for them. Later on, Lionel Messi was crowned as the world player of the year, along with the European golden boot, because of his sensational 47 goals in only 52 matches and he was also given the Ballon d’Or.
However, Lionel Messi, currently, is fighting Wesley Sneijder and Diego Forlan for the Ballon d’Or award. It is true that the Argentinean scored a lot of goals for the club during the last season but it was Sneijder who singlehandedly took Inter Milan towards
European glory and also helped the Dutch team with his five goals and took them to the final match of the FIFA World Cup 2010.
Diego Forlan was the player who was not even listed for being the best player in the world. However, his achievements are simply phenomenal. He took his team, Atletico Madrid to the final of the Europa League and won it by defeating the English side Fulham.
He was also the one who singlehandedly helped the Uruguayan side reach the semi final stage of the FIFA World Cup 2010. It is true that Luis Suarez was the one who handled the ball near the goal line to help his team win the quarter final match against Ghana,
but throughout the competition the Uruguayan captain, Diego Forlan proved his worth time and time again by constantly scoring goals. He was later awarded the golden ball award which is presented to the best player of the tournament.
Lionel Messi is definitely a sensational player but he still has a long way to go. There is no doubt that he is the best player in the world at the moment, but with so many years to go in his career, he is definitely going to become better and better. He
was never a good finisher when he started playing for Barcelona but now he never misses whenever he is inside the 18 yard box and he totally becomes a menace for all the oppositions.
With all these players highlighted, the other Barcelona players that are currently playing for Catalan giants but were never a part of their youth academy include the Brazilian right back Daniel Alves.
The fabulous full back is definitely a signing that Barcelona should praise. The former Sevilla player helps the team in not only defending but also attacking. His crosses are inch perfect and while playing on the right flank, he is well assisted by the
maestro Xavi Hernandez and the world’s best player Lionel Messi. These three combine extraordinary well on the right and with their amazing one touch style of play they enter the danger area to score goals for the team.
The left back for the club is currently the French full back Eric Abidal but the Brazilian defender Adriano and the other Brazilian defender Maxwell take his place at the left flank. Maxwell is usually played as a left midfielder as well but his defensive
qualities help him fall back and defend the ball to help the defensive walls of the Catalan giants. He is also a great player but he is definitely not as good as Daniel Alves and he is not one of the best left backs in the world at the moment, he is simply
average if he is compared to the extraordinary talented Barcelona stars.
