Football Special Report: Top 10 Greatest Strikers of All Time (Part 2)
There have been great strikers in the history of the great game called football but to tag them into “10 greatest strikers” of all time is a difficult job. However, following are the top 10 strikers from bettor.com
Writing about midfielders is very hard, but writing about strikers is even harder because of how many players tried to make a name for themselves and tried to score goals. However, the list does not only include goal scoring strikers but also the support strikers.
Enjoy!
8. Marco Van Basten (Netherlands)
The Dutch player was definitely “legendary” enough to be included in the list, even though his career was cut short because of an ankle injury that he suffered at the age of 27. Marco Van Basten could even be better and higher in the list if it wasn’t for that injury. He was a total football player, his all-round performances gave him many admirers, and his abilities also managed to help his team win a lot of trophies.
During his career, Van Basten managed to win a Winners’ Cup along with three Dutch League titles. Not only did he manage to win three Dutch League titles, along with three Serie A titles and two European Cups.
He was also a very indispensable figure for his country, as they went on to play the 1988 European Championship. He single handily helped the team by scoring goals and took them to the final match of the tournament. He scored a superb goal on a volley in the final match and helped the team secure a win, as they took the trophy home.
In 1992, he was voted as the FIFA World Player of the Year and he was also awarded with the prestigious Ballon d’Or award in the years 1988, 1989 and 1992. Individually no other player has managed to win this award for three times, only Cruyff and Michel Platini are the two names that were able to match his tally.
7. Fernando Peyroteo (Portugal)
If we were to name only one “best goal scorer” of all time, Fernando Peyroteo would definitely be the one. Peyroteo’s goals tally is just above every striker in the world and no player even comes close to him when it comes down to scoring goals. His goal to game ratio is simply outstanding as the Portuguese has managed to score more goals than the games that he has played.
He used to play for the Portuguese club Sporting and while performing for his side, he managed to score 331 goals in only 187 games. That is correct; his record can be matched by no one else, as he was able to score 1.68 goals per game which is simply unparallel in world football. He used to score twice in almost every game and sometimes even more than twice. His record is still present in the books, as he scored 9 goals in one game.
In another game, he scored 8 goals while there were 3 occasions where the Portuguese scored a double hat-trick. Not only this, he scored 5 goals on 12 occasions and also scored 4 goals for seven times in his career.
Such a good goal scoring record is kept by no one in the history of the game, and a player like this is definitely to be included in the “best strikers” list.
6. Ronaldo (Brazil)
Yes, there might be doubts surrounding Ronaldo’s position in this list. Some might say that he shouldn’t be included and some might say he is not being rated correctly but the “phenomenon” Ronaldo does get a spot in this list and there is a reason why he only managed to make it to the 6th spot.
During his time on the field, Ronaldo was one of the most feared players and for a good reason and that was because of his “great” finishing abilities. In the late 90s and early 00s, it was Ronaldo who was simply showing the world why he managed to score the highest number of goals in the FIFA World Cup.
His time at the Italian club Inter Milan was “bumped” because of an injury that he suffered and he managed to secure a move to the Spanish team, Real Madrid who were then known as the “Galacticos.” Throughout his footballing career, Ronaldo bagged himself a Brazilian Cup, a Dutch Cup, the UEFA Cup and also the Spanish Cup. Not only did he manage to win the Cup Winners’ Cup, he also won two La Liga titles with Real Madrid.
However, all the gold was simply not enough for the Brazilian sensation. He continued playing fabulous football for his country and continued being a success in Brazil. He was in the squad that won the two World Cups, 1994 and 2002. It is still a noted fact that the reason why the Brazilians weren’t able to win the final match against France, in 1998 was only because of Ronaldo’s fitness, with which he was struggling a bit too much.
He has been named as the “European Player of the Year” for two times and he has also been awarded with FIFA World Player of the year for three times. This record can only be shared by his Real Madrid team mate Zinedine Zidane. Ronaldo has scored 15 goals in the FIFA World Cup and broke the record of the legendary Brazilian player Pele. He got his last World Cup goal in the 2006 tournament.
