Football Special Report: Tottenham Hotspurs 2010-11 Season Review
The Northern part of London is a place rich in football, as both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs come from this part of the country. Arsenal is more successful than its neighbours and they have won more silverware in the history of English Premier League.
Tottenham, on the other hand, has been less successful, but they really showed their strength by winning the Carling Cup in 2008.
Last season, Tottenham was the surprising package in the English Premier League. The football pundits were hoping for some change in the top four of English Premier League, as some of the clubs showed strength to break into the Champions League spots. These
clubs included Everton, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City. Among these four mid-table sides, Manchester City was the strongest, as they had a fresh supply of players after the take-over from a billionaire from Abu Dhabi. Tottenham also brought
in some quality players, but they never looked like a side capable of competing with the likes of City and Liverpool.
However, City had a disappointing season and Liverpool as well. Therefore, Tottenham held on to the important matches and broke into the top four, kicking Liverpool out of the last Champions League spot. All the clubs set higher goals in their next season
in order to make sure that they are moving in a positive direction. So, Tottenham had their eyes on the top three positions in the English Premier League, but their start has not been great so far.
The major problem faced by Tottenham was an inconsistency in their results. The Champions League had a part to play in Spurs’ failure to produce results in easy matches. The players seemed fatigued after their midweek fixtures, which made it hard for them
to continue on the weekends. Therefore, when Tottenham beat Inter Milan in Europe, they lost the match against Bolton Wanderers on the next weekend. This thing has been troubling Tottenham in the most part of their current season, but they are now finding
consistency in their results.
In the last five matches, Tottenham has won two very important matches in the league. First, the Spurs won the local derby, going away from home, at Emirates Stadium. This match was a major boost to the morale of young Spurs side, as they were facing a deficit
of two goals in the first half but they came back with three goals in the second. This victory was enough to take Spurs in few of their next fixtures, as the London side beat Liverpool as well, at White Hart Lane.
Currently, Tottenham is in fifth place, only one point behind Manchester City and six points from the top of the table. However, with the current form, it would not be long before Tottenham would overtake Manchester City in the Premier league, challenging
Arsenal and Chelsea for the second and third spot. The match against Chelsea is also approaching, and the result of that match would determine Tottenham’s future in the league as well.
Gareth Bale has been the star player for Tottenham this season. The midfielder emerged as a great player when he scored a hat-trick against Inter Milan, in Spurs away defeat at San Siro. Since then, Bale has become the central figure in Tottenham squad,
emerging as the playmaker as well. The midfielder was also the man behind the comeback at Emirates Stadium, as he was the scorer of first goal from Tottenham. In the league, Bale has scored five goals, making him the second top scorer for Spurs.
The major signing for Tottenham, this season, was Rafael Van der Vaart, signed from Real Madrid. The Dutch midfielder has been instrumental in the attack for Spurs and he has scored six goals, so far, making another four assists in the league. Jermain Defoe
remained out for the most part because of an injury, but his place was covered by the two great midfielders. Now, Defoe is making his way back into the team but Spurs are facing an injury to Van der Vaart, which would definitely damage their campaign in England,
as well as in Europe.
