Football Stars become Fashion Icons
It seems the world of men’s fashion is changing in 2010 and leading that change is a bunch of footballers. Yes it seems unlikely that footballers would know how to dress well but they seem to have become some of the most well dressed men on the planet. They are regularly compared with movie stars and musicians in the way they dress. It seems money is not a factor here, although it helps, but these men have a natural talent for looking good and probably have a team of great stylists to help them out. From footballers like Beckham to the recently crowned World Cup winner Iker Casillas, it seems all the rest of us men should be looking to football players for fashion advice.
It seems a lot of importance is given to the way footballers and other athletes dress these days. If we only took one look at the substitute bench of the England team, we would have seen a very sharply dressed David Beckham nursing an Achilles heel injury. The entire team was very well dressed in Marks and Spencer suits that were especially designed for the team this year. It did nothing to help their on-pitch performance because they played horrendously and ended their run very early on in the competition. Even though they were sent home packing very early on in the contest, at least they looked good doing it.
If we are to stay with footballers, one of the top footballers in the world at the moment is a huge style icon. From having perfectly styled hair before, during and even after every match, Cristiano Ronaldo pulls off being a style icon with ease. The fact that he is a sports star helps his body compliment the clothes he wears. He is known for wearing slim fitted suits and having an all round European look to his fashion. Another famous footballer who seems to have an eye for fashion and style is the recently crowned World Champion, the Spanish captain and goalkeeper, Iker Casillas. It may be because of the fact that he is the captain of the team and he needs to lead his team and country at every opportunity, but the man always dresses well. It seems to be that the more famous a footballer gets the better he has to dress.
It seems to be with all sorts of celebrities and very famous athletes that once they start appearing more and more in the limelight, they have to look good doing it. With footballers the case for looking good stems from the fact that they are representing their country and their people wherever they go. So by looking good while doing it they become ambassadors for their countries. By seeing a different side to footballers, people all over the world get a different impression of a country and its citizens. Also as they are role models and icons for a huge number of people, they would like fans to emulate the good things they do instead of the bad. By dressing well, they try to get their fans to follow their style and this becomes a huge opportunity for fashion brands out there. Fashion brands like to put their clothes on famous faces and when they find a good looking footballer who can effortlessly carry off their clothes, they see a surge in sales with customers following that athlete’s style choices.
There seems to also be a connection between style and fame. It sometimes is the case that a footballer becomes more famous for his style on the pitch than for the way he plays. Players with crazy hairstyles and crazy tattoos get noticed a lot more and this could lead to their fame increasing. Sometimes as in the case of Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo or Casillas, their playing skills are so good that their fame and style sense both increase at the same pace.
But at the end of the day should it matter what a footballer dresses like? Is it not the fact that football is a game about being able to play the best 90 minutes that a player can on a pitch? Who really cares what they look like while doing it, as long as they are scoring goals, creating beautiful plays in the midfield or making amazing stops in goal? Does it really matter if they look good in a suit? Well to some people it does and they really like to see their favourite athletes dressed well. Well that could be the definition of a modern athlete, plays well on the field, and, looks good off of the field.
