Football Transfer News: Chelsea Aiming for Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric
Zdravko Mamic, vice president of Dinamo Zagreb, has revealed that Tottenham’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857 is the top priority in Chelsea’s transfer targets. The January transfer window is around the corner and the clubs have once again joined
the race to sign http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Big-Players-c38635 to boost their squads.
Mamic said that he learned of Chelsea’s intentions during a lunch with Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786.
"I was with Ancelotti for lunch. I was very proud when I heard what he said about Modric," Mamic told the British tabloid
The Sun. "Luka is top of his list, his first pick when it comes to new signings.”
Modric played for Dinamo Zagreb for six years until his move to Tottenham in 2008, and Mamic is thought to have been the engineer behind that £16.5 million transfer.
"I'm not Modric's agent, I am just his friend, but I am very proud,” said Mamic. "I don't want to say anything more because I don't want to upset my friends at Tottenham."
Chelsea is currently at crisis point, having moved in recent weeks from the top of the Premier League table to fourth position. Ancelotti has used all the options available to him in the Chelsea squad, but no one has yet been able
to turn things around for the Blues. The midfield has been a major problem for Ancelotti this season. Chelsea lost http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Frank-Lampard-c14097 remained out for the major part of the season due to an injury.
This has led to the realization that Chelsea do not have enough depth in their squad to counter such mishaps. Therefore, acquiring new creative talent in the midfield has become a necessity.
Modric has been playing at White Hart Lane for over two years now, playing an important role in the midfield and helping his team rise in the rankings in the past two seasons. Tottenham was able to break into the top four of the
Premier League last season, after years of monopolization by the usual teams (Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool), and therefore qualified for the UEFA Champions League at the expense of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809. Tottenham went on to finish on top of their
group table, ahead of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan, in the Champions League. Modric was instrumental in this success and made a name for himself as one of the best creative midfielders playing today. So he would certainly be a very good choice for Chelsea, should the transfer
come through.
But given how crucial the 25-year-old has been for Tottenham, it is doubtful the club will let him go for anything other than a very substantial sum. The only problem with this deal would be that Modric has already played in the
Champions League this season for Tottenham and so will not be able to play in the tournament for Chelsea.
