Football Transfer Update: Sir Alex Ferguson insists he is happy with the squad
Yet again Sir Alex Ferguson has stated in a press conference that he is happy with the players available to him and does not want to get into the transfer market just for the sake of it. This is definitely bad news for the Manchester United supporters, who are no different from the fans of bigger European clubs, who always look forward to the summer transfer window hoping their club would make at least one big signing to take their game a level above. This same feeling is probably shared by the squad, also who need refreshing from time to time and adding a better player always takes some pressure off the settled ones.
Sir Alex insists there is no quality in the available players in the transfer market and there is no value to the huge sums required to lure a player to the club. He has commonly, and very correctly, used the term “inflated prices” for the recent transfers about which he feels that selling clubs ask for fortunes when one of the bigger European clubs comes calling.
Manchester United have changed their strategy of signing players to secret pursuit, ever since players like Arjen Robben and Michael Essien were snatched by the newly rich Chelsea. The threat has now only doubled after Manchester City seems to have the world’s money on their disposal for buying any player they want. Apart from the signings of Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov, United’s all signings in recent years in recent years became public, when the players had already put pen to paper. Clear example includes the recent signing of the Mexican youngster Javier Hernandez A.K.A Chicharito.
Manchester United followers would have hoped that one fine morning they would wake up to see a photo in the newspapers of another top class player holding the club scarf in Old Trafford, standing with Sir Alex and the Chief Executive David Gill. However, it seems they will have to wait a little longer before this could happen.
Last Saturday, Sir Alex was spotted at Craven Cottage to watch Fulham take on Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly. Speculations were rife that he was there to watch Mesut Ozil to form his final opinion about the player. Nevertheless, the very next day after the Community Shield win over Chelsea, Sir Alex went public to state that although he admired the player but would not make any bids to bring him to the United fold this summer.
Experts considered Ozil to be an ideal long term replacement for Paul Scholes, who could easily give 15 odd goals per season from midfield, a phenomenon which has become extremely after the revival of Chelsea. We just need to look at Frank Lampard and his goals tally each season to establish how important it is for a team to have a goal scoring midfielder in their ranks.
Sir Alex has vowed to give more opportunities to the young players this season, especially the ones who have come through the United youth system. The golden generation of the Manchester United academy, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville are in the twilight of their careers but there is another crop ready to follow. Johnny Evans is the leading example for the likes of Darron Gibson, the Da Silva twins and Federico Macheda all of whom could cement their places in the playing squad this season.
Sir Alex has made addition to the defenders in shape of Chris Smalling, after they were reduced to skeleton when nine of his defenders were on the treatment table and Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher made the central defensive partnership.
Sir Alex has already loaned out one of his young strikers, Mame Diouf to Blackburn Rovers, to gain valuable experience by playing week in week out in the premiership and is also ready to let Danny Wellback follow the suite, while he has kept Tom Cleverley available to him for at least the first half the season.
