Football Transfer Update: Why Suarez, As Apposed To Cole, Is The Man For Spurs
Joe Cole signs for Liverpool and Tottenham fans are dejected. Well that’s not actually the case, as anyone who thinks missing out on Cole is nothing short of a disaster for the club is only seeing the glass as half empty.
They didn’t actually need the services of the player who prefers to play in a central role. Although at Chelsea, Cole was always used on the wings but the man himself has admitted that he prefers a more central role and will get that at Liverpool.
When you consider the situation with Spurs, Cole actually doesn’t even fit into the first team, he was used on the left wing for Chelsea and for Tottenham Gareth Bale has been phenomenal last season and has just penned a six year deal at White hart Lane. In addition, for the role of Central attacking midfielder, they have Luka Modric. Modric also recently signed a new contract and will be Harry’s preferred choice to play in the hole just behind the strikers.
Harry Redknap has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal and all those players work in that system. They know their team very well and gel with each other. Bale on the Left, David Bently on the right and Niko Kranjcar and Luka Modric in the centre is the preferred system of the Spurs midfield.
The already have Sandro, who will compete with the Honduran Wilson Palacios and Tom Huddlestone for the role of holding midfielder. So where would Harry have deployed Cole? Perhaps on the bench. If that’s the case then why is any Spurs fan disappointed? After all, they have only missed out on a player that would have just added a little more glamour to their bench.
Given the fact, the Eidur Gudjohnson only just signed a permanent deal at the club rules out the fact the Cole could have been deployed upfront. He just would not fit in their system.
For Cole, this could have the case; of out of the frying pan into the fire, as he was only gracing the bench at Chelsea and at Spurs he could have done nothing more.
Rather than being dejected about not signing the player, Spurs fan should be over the moon. They should be happy that their first team is so good, that even Cole as talent as he may be, would not fit in the squad, he just isn’t necessary
Spurs fans should be ecstatic about that. They should be quietly impressed that their first team is so improved that, while Cole would have been nice, he wasn't necessary.
Nevertheless, one area where Spurs need to improve is in the striking department. Peter Crouch is just an over rated striker and by no means a player who can bang in goals day in day out in a competition like Champions League. He just managed 8 last season in 38 games.
Robbie Kean is obviously surplus to requirements and is already in talks with other clubs for a permanent move, while Jermaine Defoe despite banging 21 last term cannot do it all alone and would require some assistance
Gudjohnsen, given his age, is not ample cover, although he impressed with his performances last season but he cannot play 38 games in a season and Spurs desperately need a quality striker who guarantees them goals in double figures, not to mention having the quality to deliver in the Champions League.
All these facts make it easy to see why Spurs have been linked with Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez in the recent weeks and with all the money available to them, they can even go and test the resolve of Ajax Amsterdam, for the signature of their goal machine Luis Suarez.
Cole may have been a glamorous signing for the North London club but signing Suarez will be the real deal and if they are to make an impact in the Champion’s league, next season that, he is the only man Spurs should be pushing for.
