Football Update: Bolton Wanderers vs. Newcastle United (Review)
Owen Coyle’s men impressive start to the season got even better yesterday when they thrashed Chris Houghton side by five goals to one at the Reebok Stadium. The win over Newcastle United took Bolton Wanderers to their best standing in Barclays Premier League
table in recent history i.e. 4.
Bolton Wanderers were gifted the lead as Mike Williamson handed the ball inside the penalty box to give the host a penalty. Kevin Davies stepped up to take the penalty and scored the opener of the match. The first goal was shortly followed by the second
controversial goal of the match scored by Bolton’s Lee.
After the break, Bolton top scorer Elamnder scored the third for the home side before Andy Caroll managed to put his name on the score sheet, pulling one back for the Newcastle United.
Then Newcastle United, Fabrizio Coloccini was sent off due to his punch on Elmander. Moreover, Elmander went on to score another goal of the match. Moments later Kevin Davies bagged the fifth and last goal of the match from the penalty spot.
Alan Smith had a great opportunity to open the scoring early on as he capitalised on slack defending from Cahill to roam into the area, but he could only fire over the bar with his weaker left foot.
The home side soon began to take control, with Mathew Taylor working his magic down the right wing to cross into the path of the onrushing Kevin Davies in the area, only for the midfielder to fail to connect from close range as the chance went begging.
Then few moments later, Bolton started another attack and it was about to be cleared by Nolan but he touched the ball with his hand inside the box, accidentally, yet it was given penalty and Kevin Davies stepped forward to take the penalty. The Bolton skipper
placed the ball exceptionally well into the bottom right corner and sent the keeper to the wrong side.
Wanderers continued to dominate the first half and went 2-0 up after Stuart Holden free-kick rattled back off the crossbar and into a crowd of players. Newcastle United defenders failed to clear the ball and Bolton’s summer signing, Lee, took the chance
and executed it perfectly by putting the ball inside the net to give home side an added advantage.
The talismanic Swedish striker of Bolton Wanderers, Johan Elmander was impressive throughout the match and especially in the second half, when he perfectly intercepted Kevin Davies through pass and defeated Newcastle United with ease to score the third goal
for the Wanderers.
However, Newcastle were right back in it as Nolan was tackled by Paul Robinson, only for the ball to fall straight to the English striker of Magpies, Carroll, who slotted the ball in the left bottom corner of Wanderers goal.
Moments later, once again Bolton Wanderers were celebrating thanks to Johan Elmander for his second spectacular goal and added Bolton advantage to four goals.
Right after being defeated by Elmander during the built of Bolton’s fourth goal, Coloccini punched Johan Elmander to earn a straight red card. By now, Newcastle United were reduced to ten men and were three goals down.
Few minutes were left in the final whistle, as Kevin Davies was once again fouled by Newcastle defender in the box to give another penalty to home side. Kevin Davies once again stepped up to take the penalty and this time again he went for the same direction,
which keeper anticipated but failed to stop the ball and thus Kevin scored his second and Bolton’s fifth goal.
