Football Update: Carling Cup Match – Birmingham City vs. Milton Keynes Dons (Full Time Report)
The first half was well dominated by the home side, Birmingham City. Birmingham were undefeated in 17 straight games and by leading 3-0 against the third tire team Milton Keynes Dons, they showed everyone how strong they were at their home.
With three goals coming from the newly signed players, Birmingham showed everyone that they were good enough to compete for the first half of the English Premier League, as they were undefeated for 17 straight home games and if they would bag another win
against Milton, they would take their tally to 18.
When the second half started, Gary McKenzie came on for the Englishman Sean O'Hanlon. The substitution was obvious as now they were looking to attack and regain the lead that they had given in the first half of the game.
The tall guy Zigic was being a constant threat to the opposition, as Birmingham were taking advantage of his height and were playing him crosses so that he can head the ball into the net. However, he did not really manage to take advantage of it throughout
the second half even though Alexander Hleb kept on delivering pin point crosses to him.
Zigic managed to earn a free kick in the second half as the clock reached the 50thminute mark. The dead ball specialist David Martin took the free kick and he tried it directly on goal but it was miles outside target and another chance was wasted
by the home team. However, they were totally calm throughout the game and there was no pressure on them as they were leading the game 3-0.
Later on in the game, many substitutions were made by both the teams and Alexander Hleb was taken off, while Kevin Phillips came on for the home team. Aaron Wibrahim was also brought on for Dan Woodards, as now the away team were trying to take advantage
of the "attacking players" that they had on bench. With the striking force being introduced, the home team decided to move the ball around and they kept on making decent chances to add more to the lead; however, they did not find the net.
In the 80th minute, Birmingham City faced a shocker as the score was taken to 3-1 and only a 2 goal lead was left for the home team. The newly introduced striker Aaron Wibrahim was the one who scored the goal for the club and he was the one who
found the ball at his feet inside the 18 yard box after a cross from Martin. He easily drove the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal and easily finished it to shorten the lead that the home team secured earlier in the first half.
However, his goal came too late into the game and it was simply "too little too late" for the away side and they did not really manage to capitalize after that one goal. They kept on diving all over the place to gain the possession of the ball and rough
tackles started to fly around throughout the field. The match was almost over as the 85th minute was going on and it was Derbyshire who got a yellow card after he tackled Johnson right outside the 18 yard box. The free kick was taken by Johnson
himself but it was of no help and the score line remained the same even after so much possession of the ball throughout the second half.
The final whistle was blown as the home side managed to win another home game, as they took their tally to 18 home games undefeated. Birmingham City warned all the Premier League sides that their "new entries" were worth the money that they spent on them
and they are seriously a big threat on the wings and in the midfield. Zigic finally scored his first goal for the club and so did Hleb.
