Football Update: Carling Cup round up
It is midweek when the Premier League took a sabbatical for the English League Cup and it was not disappointing at all, as last night was a goal glut in the Carling Cup.

The shock of the night came in Brentford, where the League one outfit caused an upset of mammoth proportions as they knocked out Everton and recently relegated Burnley shocked Owen Coyle’s Bolton Wanderers. For all the other Premier league teams, it all went
according to plan as there were no major upsets.

Tottenham welcomed their fierce city rivals at the White Hart Lane in what was the plum tie of the night and the match was a thing of beauty, as both teams came out of the ranks flying with some mesmeric football on display.

Arsenal opted for an attacking formation and went into the game with a 4-3-3, while the home side packed its midfield with 5 defenders in a 4-5-1 formation.

Arsenal however took the lead as early as the 9th minute when Rosicky, Gibbs and Wilshire combined at the edge of the box to play a stinging ball across the face of the goal, only for the debutant Henri Lansbury to slot home from close range.

Robbie Keane equalized for the hosts in the second half, no team managed to score after that, and the tie went into extra times.

Tottenham self destructed at the start of extra time and just 30 seconds into the period Bassong pulled down Nasri in the box to give Arsenal a penalty and Nasri scored from the spot.

5 minutes later Bassong was the culprit again, as this time Chamakh was brought down in the box and Nasri made no mistake from the spot.

The tie was over by now and Andrei Arshavin added the sheen on the score line with another goal at the end of first period of extra time to make it 4-1.

In another high profile clash in the North West derby, Owen Coyle visited his former employers Burnley and suffered a dismal evening as the Championship side claimed a Premier League scalp.

Talismanic midfielder Wade Elliot scored on the stroke of half time and then defended their goal with t5hier lives as they inflicted a painful defeat on the Trotters.

Everton continued their miserable start to the season as they humiliatingly crashed out to League One’s Brentford 4-3 on penalties.

The match was ties at 1-1 after the end of extra time and the hosts dominated on penalties to put an end to Toffee’s League Cup dream.

Wolverhampton Wanderers also suffered a scare at the hands of Notts County as they could only muster a 1-1 score line at the end of 90 minutes but a Kevin Doyle brace in the extra time made sure there was no giant killing in this tie, as they came out of the
tie 4-2 winners.

West Ham and Sunderland played another all Premier League clash in the Carling Cup as they were pitted against Sunderland.

Piquionne and Obianna scored for the visitors as they defeated the black cats to cancel out Asamoah Gyan’s goal.

Danny Higginbottam Jones scored for the Potters as Stoke City beat Fulham at the Britianna Stadium to send the Craven Cottage outfit crashing out of the League Cup.
Other Results of the night were:
