Football Update: Chelsea Seems Hopeful Of Resolving Injury Issues
Chelsea has announced that their central defender Alex would be available for the match against Birmingham on Saturday. Also, their captain John Terry is also going to be available for their Champions League fixture in midweek, against MSK Zilina.
Chelsea faced a real crisis in recent weeks when it was announced that their defender Alex would be sidelined because of a problem in his knee. The Brazilian defender was facing two months out as a surgery was required on his knee. At the same time, Chelsea
announced nerve problem with John Terry that has resulted in excruciating pains. As Terry was looking for a cure, it was announced that he might be sidelined for months. Also, Frank Lampard remains a doubt to comeback for the London Blues, which has made things
worse for Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Chelsea.
In the absence of John Terry and Alex last week, the job in the centre of the park was granted to Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira. However, the part time central defenders were not up to the challenge brought on by Sunderland. Chelsea lost the match
as their defence was shattered in the own fortress, Stamford Bridge. In the end, the injuries proved fatal for Chelsea as they lost the match by 3-0.
This week’s test is against Birmingham, at St Andrew’s. In the absence of both their main defenders, it would be difficult for Chelsea to produce positive results. However, it has now been confirmed that Alex would be available for the match against Birmingham.
Chelsea confirmed that Alex requires a knee surgery to be fully fit for him team. But, because of the importance of the weekend’s clash, the surgery has been postponed.
The decision was taken after Alex completed the training with Brazilian squad. In the midweek, Brazil faced Argentina in Doha, for a friendly encounter. Although, Alex did not play any part in the match, as he remained on the bench, but he did well in training
sessions. Therefore, Alex might be partially fit on the weekend, which has earned him a place against Birmingham.
The problem with John Terry has also been diagnosed and Chelsea is hoping for a quick remedy. He has some problem with the nerve endings in one of his leg muscles, which causes pains as he moves. However, the problem would be solved sooner than expected
and Terry would be back in the midweek. It was also told to the press that Terry is facing this problem for more than a year now. But, despite his problem he had the spirit and energy to play for the whole part of the last season. This season, Chelsea is expecting
their defender to produce a similar kind of enthusiasm.
There is no doubt that Frank Lampard would still be missing for at least the next week. Now, his substitute in Chelsea’s squad, Yuri Zhirkov of Russia, has also been sidelined because of an injury. This would create a crisis in Chelsea’s midfield, which
was really exposed last week, against Sunderland. Michael Essien still has a ban for one match, so he will not play on the weekend. In this scenario, Chelsea would face problems in their midfield, which would be exposed once again.
Amidst all these problems, Chelsea’s title dreams seem to have shattered. At a point when nothing was happening for the Blues, the comeback news of two of their central defenders is really a silver lining. The next few weeks are very important for Chelsea,
and they need to hold on to their lead in English Premier League. In January, when the transfer window opens, Ancelotti would definitely go out and buy someone to complement his defence. However, before January, Ancelotti would have to continue producing results
with the resources that are available to him.
