Football Update: Diego Forlan says return to England is a possibility
Diego Forlan is one of the most sought after strikers in the world right now, named the best player in World Cup 2010; Forlan scored 5 goals for his country Uruguay and took them to the semi finals of the World Cup.
Forlan has admitted that he would love to come back to England if a good offer comes by. Currently he is applying his trade with Spanish club Atletico Madrid and led them to Europa League win last season.
The 31 year old South American did play in England for Manchester United but could not find his feat; he was deemed as a flop at Old Trafford and was later sold off to Villarreal. After moving to Spain he really got into his own, Forlan won the golden boot
in his first season beating players like Eto’o and others on his way to becoming the league’s top scorer. He achieved the same feat in 2008-09 season for the 2nd time and off course followed it up next year by winning the Europa League with Atletico.
It is rare for a player with such a reputation in club football to go on and produce the same display on the international scene. Forlan however did manage to do exactly that, the striker was by far the best player not only for his team but as a whole in
the world cup that was held in the summers in South Africa.
After the world cup, he was linked with several big names in Europe, and in England. There were talks of him signing a deal with Tottenham Hotspurs; however, he decided to remain in Spain and continue to play for Atletico. He is still under contract by the
Madrid club and has 3 more years left on his contract.
The Golden boot winner said that he would not hesitate to move if a good offer comes by. While talking to a British News channel Forlan said, "If I have the chance to go, I will go. You know, it's like I always say, when I came here to Europe it's because
I left my home and I left everybody so I'm not attached to a team.”
"(You look at) the best offer you have and if you have a chance and it is good and it is good for the team and it is good for you, I don't see it as bad, I see it is good and I will move."
Despite those claims, the forward admitted that no serious offers had yet come to him. He said that after the world cup there was a lot of news of many clubs interested in him. However, in truth he said no one actually made contact with him. Forlan admitted
that he was flattered but kept waiting for a concrete offer to come along which actually never came.
"It's just the papers. Never, never until now, they never sent any of them (offers)," he said.
"The papers say things but at the moment I am here, I have a contract with the club and there's nothing else to say."
The former Manchester United player did not rule out a move to England and said that the horrors of his time at old Trafford are in his past. He spent almost 8 months to get his first goal and spent most of his time making appearances from the bench in his
2 years with the club. He added that all of that is in his past and he would love to go back there and prove himself.
"Everybody says things, that maybe you don't want to go back," he said.
"The time I had in England was great and I enjoyed it and if I had the chance to go back I would be really happy."
