Football Update: EPL News- Liverpool beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1
Liverpool finally secured their first 3 points in the league after some time. The Reds beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in a match that saw Liverpool dominate most of the match, and finally in the 2nd half the goals did start to come. For Liverpool,
it was their ace marksman Fernando Torres who started and also got his name on the score sheet by scoring the winner.
The first half was all Liverpool, the home team dominated the play almost right from the first whistle. The home team made several great chances but just could not convert them into a goal. Blackburn on the other hand were just not willing to commit too
many men forward and looked content to sit back and absorb Liverpool pressure. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard the star duo has started together after a long time, and the pair looked good and energetic. The way Liverpool were actually playing one could
not tell that they are currently lying in the bottom 3 of the table and have encountered the worst ever start to a season in more than 5 decades. Regardless of numerous chances, the first half still ended goalless for Liverpool, but signs were there that
2nd half would bring an opener.
Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard got the 2nd half under way at Liverpool and as expected Liverpool really did not take long to get the first goal. The home team literally started from where they had left off in the first half. Steven Gerrard
sent over an excellent ball from a corner and Sotirios Kyrgiakos met it with a thumping header, Martin Olsson was placed right at the goal line and did his best to head it away but the ball had plenty of pace on it and still went into the net. There was massive
relief all over Anfield and not to mention Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson was evidently pleased and was breathing easy.
However the joy was really short lived, Liverpool were probably still celebrating the goal and soaking in the relief. When Blackburn finally decided to come out and play, the ball was cut back to El Hadji Diouf inside the box, and he saw his shot cleared
off the line by Paul Konchesky but the clearance unfortunately hit Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and rebounded into his own net. It was dreadful and unlucky for Liverpool and all the joy of the goal was really taken away by that shock own goal.
The action though did not stop there, Liverpool put the own goal behind them quickly and as soon as they kicked off from the centre circle after the goal they had only one thing in their mind. Steven Gerrard as ever was leading the attack and providing balls
left right and centre.
Liverpool did not take long to retake the lead; Roy Hodgson who is normally a calm man and keeps his emotions in check was jumping with joy and punching his fist in the air. Steven Gerrard teed up Joe Cole to cross from the left and from seven yards out
Fernando Torres got on the end of Joe Cole’s low cross and calmly side-foot the ball past Paul Robinson. It was as if he had not missed out on any game time at all. The Spaniard really is a goalscoring machine when he gets it right. There was once again the
same loud relief at Anfield and what more it was their favourite Fernando Torres who had got the goal.
Liverpool though knew that they could not make the same mistake twice, and after the goal were more cautious and less adventurous. The hosts employed more men in defence and looked to be content to hold what they had. Blackburn were reduced to long distance
shots and it was Morten Gamst Pedersen who lashed in a left-foot shot from 25 yards for Blackburn, but it was miles over Pepe Reina's crossbar.
It did get a bit dull in the final 10 minutes or so at Anfield but the home fans were not complaining, and Liverpool did manage to hold on and got all 3 points. Considering all that has been going on at the club in recent times it was a much welcomed win.
Liverpool moved up one place but are still in bottom 3 with 18th place.
