Football Update: EPL News- Liverpool vs. Blackburn (First half report)
Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at home by Blackburn Rovers, the Reds did look to be the better side for most of the half. However, the visitors did just enough to hold on and they did have their share of chances, but just like the hosts the killer
instinct was missing in front of goal. Considering all that has been going on at Liverpool it would be an understatement to say Liverpool need to win this game, but in simple words, the incentive of getting out of the bottom 3 should be enough to motivate
Liverpool to go on and get a winner in the 2nd half.
Liverpool did look to be the side making all the moves. The duo of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres was once again back together. And it did not take long for Liverpool to get their first chance. It was amazing stuff as Fernando Torres played Maxi in
down the right and when he pulled it back to Joe Cole his effort was brilliantly saved by the foot of Paul Robinson, the deflection fell to Raul Meireles who on the run hit it first time but went harmlessly wide. It was a close call for Rovers and Liverpool
should have taken the lead.
Paul Robinson was certainly keeping Blackburn in the match; he had pulled off another super one-handed save to keep out Sotirios Kyrgiakos's header from a Steven Gerrard cross.
The trend continued as there was another Liverpool counter attack after a Blackburn corner and Raul Meireles played the ball along the box to Steven Gerrard, who saw his 18-yard drive again superbly saved by former England Number one Paul Robinson.
After 20 minutes, there was an enforced change for Blackburn, as the injured Steven Nzonzi went off and Vince Grella was sent on in his place.
Liverpool were doing most of the pressing at Anfield but it was still very quiet on Merseyside, Blackburn were not offering much.
Steven Gerrard's corner fell for Raul Meireles 22 yards out and he hit a superbly sweet right-foot volley that Michel Salgado got his head in the way of to clear. He needed a bit of treatment, the former Real Madrid man.
With almost half an hour gone, Liverpool definitely should have taken the lead, Sotirios Kyrgiakos flicked on a Steven Gerrard corner from the right and inside the six-yard box Lucas could only head the ball over Blackburn bar. Another great move and a great
chance was wasted.
That was pretty much the final action of the first half as the ref blew for the break, Liverpool really need to convert one of those chances, before Blackburn actually wake up and start contributing to the match.
