Football Update: England’s Coach, Fabio Capello keeps his job
The Football Association of England has taken its decision; Capello will continue to reign as the manager of England.
England crashed out of the World Cup in the Round of 16, after losing 4-1 to Germany. The Germans humiliated the star studded English team, who perhaps deserved to lose. They had a shaky start to the tournament, when they drew 1-1 against USA. They met Algeria next, and were frustrated to a 0-0 draw. In their must win bout against Slovenia, England picked up the pace, and won a tight fought battle to earn a spot in the Round of 16. They met Germany, and from the opening minute of the match, never looked like the team which was considered as favourites. They lost possession easily and were quickly 2-0 down. They however sought a comeback, with a goal from Upson meant that the English were right back in the game. Moments later, Lampard’s perfectly legal goal was disallowed owing to a poor referee decision. Germany made it 4-1 on the day, humiliating the three lions. FA had remained quiet about the decision of Capello’s future, with Capello given a two weeks time for a decision regarding his job.
FA has however confirmed that Capello will keep his job, and fulfil his contract till the 2012 Euro Championships. It is believed that the decision may be reached owing the heavy compensation the FA would have to pay if they terminate the Italians contract. Roy Hodgson was considered to the best alternative to Capello, but he has taken over as Liverpool manager. Capello’s contract had been extended just weeks before England’s defeat to Germany, and was obvious that he would stay.
The decision may not sit well with many, with former England Captain and legendary forward Alan Shearer calling for the Italian to be fired immediately. Sir David Richards, the Club England Chairman however explained that they have closely monitored his performance and still consider him to be the best man for the job. He added that everyone is disappointed with England’s performance in South Africa, but prior to the World Cup, Capello was considered to be one of the very best in the field. He said that Fabio will learn from his mistakes and improve from the debacle. "Undoubtedly this will make us all stronger for the Euro 2012 campaign.” the Chaiman stated.
Capello has vowed to inject new blood into the England side, as the campaign for the Euro 2012 is expected to start in September. The so-called “Golden Generation” has failed to deliver, and have been criticized by all. This is evident when German captain Phillip Lahm claimed that the English are no longer considered a threat
The youngsters that are expected to be included in are Manchester City winger Adam Johnson. Theo Walcott along with Arsenal team mate Gibbs are also set to be included in the squad. Joe Hart and Gabriel Agbonlahor are also called up, who despite having made it into the 23 man squad in the World Cup never started for their team. 30 year old Bobby Zamora has also been called up.
Capello has to be credited for his efforts in the qualifying campaign for the World Cup. England won 9 out 10 games under his belt, and was the major reasons why England were considered the pre-tournament favourites. He would be expected to do the same, and stated that he is determined to succeed with the England team. He added that it’s important that they should learn from the mistakes, and use disappointment as a motivational factor. He assured the fans and officials that he is fully focused on qualifying for Euro, starting with playing Hungary in August. He stated that he will introduce new players to the squad and use all his ability for England’s success. He was extremely proud to be England’s manager, and was focused on his job.
