Football Update: Gerard Pique urges Fernando Torres to leave Liverpool
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has urged Liverpool striker to consider leaving Liverpool, as it would be an embarrassment for the player of his stature to be playing in the Europa league.
Pique was the team mate of Torres in Spain’s World Cup winning Campaign in South Africa and the player believed that Torres should be winning top trophies rather than aiming for second tier tournaments.
The player felt for fellow country man and stated that for Torres to enjoy success and silverware, he would have to leave a club like Liverpool. While talking to the local news paper, Pique stated that this cannot go on for Torres for long, as it would be
impossible. The defender added that before signing with Liverpool, the both had a discussion and Torres stated that the main reason behind him agreeing terms with Liverpool was to win trophies. However, Liverpool have failed on that front and owing to their
little investments, Torres may well have to seek glory elsewhere.
"It's really embarrassing for Nando to play in a team of that quality. You would not see Messi or Rooney playing in the Europa League - so there is no reason why Nando should be playing there. Along with David Villa, he is the best striker in the world.
He needs to be winning things domestically like he does with Spain,” claimed the young defender. Pique has a glorious season with Barcelona last season, where the side won all the domestic competition and also won the World Cup winner medal with Spain
in this summer’s World Cup tournament.
The defender explained his strong comments regarding one of the biggest English clubs, stating that currently Liverpool have no chance to win a single trophy and invited the 26 year old to join him at Barcelona in the summer. Liverpool have been in turmoil
since last season, where they finished 7th in the league, leading the Champions League winning manager Rafael Benitez to leave the club for Inter Milan. Liverpool were the runner ups in the Premier league two seasons ago, but owing to little investments
and financial crunches, there have been little signings. Liverpool hired star manager Roy Hodgson to take the team out of turmoil, but so has managed little. The team lost to a second tier team at Anfield, which knocked them out of the Carling Cup. The team
is also currently not in the upper half of the table and have managed just one win from 6 fixtures.
Pique thus stated that Liverpool management are currently testing the patience of the striker and not delivered the promises of titles for the past two seasons. The player explained that the management and administration of the club is in turmoil and neither
the players nor the manager has any faith in the club. Pique has no reservation that Torres would be expected to leave the club this summer and any player of lesser quality may well have left this summer. Yet, owing to Torres undeniable decency and character,
he chose to stay at the club but that may be the final straw. Pique stated that potential clubs who may want to sign the player may be Chelsea, Real Madrid or even Barcelona. The former Manchester United defender stated that Torres would want to join a club
that can promise him league titles and Champions leagues and would love nothing more than for him to join Barcelona this summer.
Liverpool recently drew against Sunderland at home and have only managed 6 points from the opening 6 matches. Their 3-2 loss at Old Trafford last weekend would have been the last thing they wanted but would want to start winning contest in order reach the
top four.
