Football Update: Inter won the Decisive contest against FC Twente
The group stage UEFA Group A match was played between Inter Milan and FC Twente at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan at Wednesday 24th Nov, 2010 (20:45 Local Time). Inter Milan was headed by Javier Zanetti with an attacking line up – Castellazi (GK),
Cordoba, Zanetti (C), Stankovic, Lucio, Eto’o, Sneijder, Cambiasso, Materazzi, Pandev and Biabiany. Whereas FC Twente was led by Wisgerhof with a line up including Mihaylov(GK), Wisgerhof, Brama, Janssen, De Jong, Ruiz, Rosales, Douglas, Janko, Chadii and
Leugers.
Esteban Cambiasso scored a decisive goal of Inter Milan’s 1-0 victory over FC Twente in an important game played this Wednesday at Milan. Inter still have one match remaining and Inter are second in the group with ten points. Inter played with high intensity
and tempo. They created some excellent opportunities to score but failed to convert domination into a goal.
In the first 18 minutes, Stankovic, Sneijder and Pandov played three accurate shots from outside the penalty box. In the meanwhile, FC Twente managed to attack twice on the Italian goal post with one shot from De Jong in 12th minute and another
shot from Ruiz in the 14th minute. In the 23rd and 26th minute, Stankovic and Pandev threw the ball towards the goal post but failed to beat Mihaylov, reason being not so powerful shots. At that time, Inter started taking pressure
and Twente improved their attacking moves. The quality of shots at 30th and 42nd minute was quite good. Jansson and Marc Janko quickly fired two attacks from the middle of the penalty box but Luca Castellazzi did a stunning job.
The first half was closed without any goal. Inter went back to find some more chances to goal. In the 55th minute, Sneijder’s free kick was blocked by the opposing player and the ball fell towards Cambiasso who instantly fired the ball right from
outside the penalty box, this time beating Mihaylov. The goal restored the confidence of Inter Milan but at the same time, FC Twente needed to equalize in order to advance to the round of 16.
Janko was substituted in the 70th minute and a yellow card was given to Leugers in the 74th minute. Inter’s Cordoba was given a second yellow of the match in the 75th minute for a reckless tackle. French referee found it
offensive. In the 80th minute, there were two substitutions, Biabiany from Inter and Leugers from FC Twente. Inter gained seven corners and FC Twente three but none of them were converted.
Although 51% of the possession was enjoyed by Inter but they couldn’t produce any other chance. They were able to maintain the 1-0 advantage over the rival team until the final whistle sounded. Inter made eleven attempts on the goal and FC Twente made only
three. Out of those three, two were very well organized but all in vain.
Esteban Cambiasso’s strike took Inter into the final stage at the expense of FC Twente. The European Champions, covered with controversies and injuries whether it be Eto’o head butt or Rafa’s woeful run in the current season. Now Inter is all set to play
their next game against Parma at 28th Nov whereas FC Twente would face NEC.
Inter Coach Rafael Benitez said, in a post match media briefing, “we had suffered from injuries over the last few months. Our main players are fit again and things may change in the upcoming games. We have some players coming back in the squad next week,
may be we start improving then.” Rafa added it’s a new beginning for them.
Whereas FC Twente wasn’t happy with their current performance and their coach Michel Preud Homme was disappointed and said it as mixed feeling because in the first half Twente had some chances which they were not able to cash. He also said, “Everyone
said before the start if we can still be there after the winter, even in the Europa League, that would be a good result in a strong group.”
