Football Update: Lionel Messi set to make the Substitute bench against Rubin Kazan
If the reports in the Spanish media are to be believed, Argentine Sensation Lionel Messi will make the return from his injury with a substitute appearance against Rubin Kazan. Lionel Messi was injured during the Barcelona’s 2 – 1 victory against Atletico
Madrid last week.
Messi was fouled in cynical fashion by Atletico Madrid defender Tomas Ujfalusi. The defender went in late on the diminutive forward only managed to catch the player’s ankle. The replays showed Messi’s ankle twisted out of proportions and many feared the
worst for the FC Barcelona talisman. Judging from the replays, Messi was set to be sidelined for as long as six months. The forward was in obvious agony and was stretchered off in tears. Guardiola later informed the press that Messi had not suffered a fracture
to everyone’s surprise. Upon further scans, it was revealed that Messi would make his return in two weeks time. Injuries to key players and forwards have been a concern for many clubs as defenders go in strong on them to restrict their impact. This has prompted
many coaches, including Guardiola, to ask referees for further protection.
The recent reports indicate that Messi’s recovery has been even faster than it was initially expected. Messi’s importance to the Blaugrana cause cannot be over emphasised. The Barcelona number 10 has been their best player for the last three seasons. It
was Messi’s indeed who won them an incredible six titles in 2008/09 season. Last season, Messi started off where he had left previously and banged in an astonishing 47 goals in all competitions. Barcelona was able to defend their league title thanks to the
forward. His exploits made sure he won the Pichichi award last season, while also making him a strong contender for Ballon D’or and World Player of the Year title.
Following Real Madrid’s appointment of Jose Mourinho, Messi needs to be in ace form this season if Barcelona is to successfully defend its title. Barcelona has looked short of ideas without Messi in their line up as they often look for inspiration from the
forward. His return would be highly welcome as the club will look to break a resolute Rubin side in Russia with his assistance.
