Football Update: Manchester United claiming the top spot beating Arsenal 1-0
Ji Sung Park proved to be a hero for the Red Devils. Manchester United took the top spot sending a message to all the pretenders of the throne to watch out for them. Park’s unlikely header just before the first half’s whistle put the Red Devils back on the
top of the league, two points clear of Arsenal. Everyone was eyeing Rooney in this match who despite of a good show in the first half missed a penalty in the later minutes of the game.
Not only this, they played with a serious momentum and showed a sense of victory right from the start of the game which not only proved them to be one of the top clubs of England but also proved Sir Alex’s 24 year contribution to the club is worth a big
round of applause. This wasn’t a genuine display from Ferguson’s squad, a performance they’re known for. The important thing here to note is that Manchester United is going strong, unbeaten and their thoughts are clear to finish on the top spot with both FA
cup and Champions League going on.
Manchester United has picked up 17 points from their last 7 game, a performance only Manchester City has come close to. Wayne Rooney who hasn’t scored since March in an open play will engage himself soon, said Ferguson. Even the return of Cesc Fabregas didn’t
prove valuable for Arsene Wenger to stay at the top spot as Arsenal is now hoping for some sort of miracle for them at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, as Chelsea will take on Manchester United.
Rooney showing his class effectively evaded Arsenal’s defence giving a tough time to Sebastian Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny from the very first minute, as a curled shot by Rooney in the ninth minute proved to be a test for a keeper who was making his
debut in the Premier League, Wojciech Szczesny. Andrey Arshavin and Marouane Chamakh skipped pass Nemanja Vidic for a header that was pretty close to Van der Sar who was eager to keep a clean sheet for this match.
Wenger’s men were playing recklessly as Jack Wilshere took a dig on Patrice Evra with a challenge, proved to be a revenge for all the verbal comments he passed against Arsenal. It wasn’t too long when Manchester United had their first chance, Nani’s flick
fizzing just outside the far post, as both Fletcher and Rooney combining for a spectacular play. Soon afterwards, Rooney took another shot which was by mistake handled by Chamakh attempting to head clear the ball.
Everything was going right for Manchester United as they were through just four minutes from the break. Rooney heading the ball to Nani whose driven cross deflected by Gael Clichy’s heel found Park’s header who didn’t fail to impress his manager. Park’s
header gave an adrenaline rush to the fans as the attendance for this match was above 75,000.
After the restart, both the teams were attacking the defences when 16 minutes from time Rooney stepped up for a penalty kick but missing it, because of Clichy handling the ball as Nani made a run inside the box. Critics quoted this match as a drama, as Arsenal
was playing its best attacking line-up yet goalless. As Sir Alex Ferguson said:
“It was an unusual penalty, normally Wayne always keeps them down, and I’ve never known him to hit one over. That gave Arsenal a bit of impetus but we defended very well, the back four were fantastic, absolutely magnificent. We had to play well, in these
major games you want to perform and I think we did, particularly in the first half we did very, very well."
