Football Update: Mourinho receives a one match ban
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho ,has been handed a one match ban and a fine by the Europe’s football governing body ,UEFA. Mourinho was found guilty of instructing two of his players ,Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos, to deliberately receive red cards in their previous champions league match against Ajax. Both players have been fined 20,000 Euros for their role in the incident. Mourinho, who has been fined 40,000 Euros, will now miss Madrid’s, final group G match in the champions league, against Auxerre.
The Portuguese has also received a three year probation by the UEFA and any violations during the probationary period will result in a further one match ban. The Spanish players, Alonso and Ramos, received their second yellow card for wasting time in the dying moments of the match. Madrid’s captain, Iker Casillas, who allowed Ramos to take the goal kick which resulted in his second yellow card, has been handed a fine of 10,000 Euros. Substitute goal keeper Jerzy Dudek, who delivered Mourinho’s message to the on field players, has also been fined 5000 Euros. The club was also fined an additional 120 Euros by UEFA.
Madrid’s Chief Jorge Valdo has expressed his disappointment over the decision and has accused UEFA of double standards. He said,
“I can't go into details but there have been many players who have done something similar and were not punished. What happens at Real Madrid also happens at other clubs but they are not as severe."
Premier league manager Arsene Wenger in a surprise comment, before the verdict, had urged Europe’s football governing body to take action against the Spanish giants. He
stated,
“Yes, I think there should be sanctions. I do not want to see that, it's a pity to see that from a big club.”
The news comes after a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of arch rivals Barcelona, away from home. The coach, players and the club have been given three days to appeal against the decision. Madrid’s next match is against Valencia in La Liga, at home.
