Football Update: Not a happy return for AC Milan as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Cesena
A.C Milan were not very active in the summer transfer window as they managed to sign very few players. However, just before the deadline, A.C Milan shocked the whole world by signing former ‘Inter Striker’ Ibrahimovic from Barcelona. Along with that, Milan also signed unsettled Manchester City forward Robinho on the last day of the summer transfer window. All credit goes to their President for giving Milan such attacking gifts. Thus, Milan formed the most dangerous attack of the season 2010-11. With the likes of Italian legend Filipo Inzaghi, Brazilian young striking sensation Alexendre Pato and the living legend ‘The Unmistakeable’ Ronaldinho, they are now the world’s most fatal attack, at least on papers.
It could not have been any worse. Milan lost to Casena by 2-0. Just few days before the doomed last week of Milan, Rossoneri were being billed as ‘favourites’ for the prestigious Scudetto following the arrival of super strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho. The acquisition of these two super stars also sparked a wave of optimism amongst at the San Siro.
However, that dream didn’t last long and Milan hopes shattered when they were defeated by newly promoted Cesena. It was Casena first home match in the Serie A after 19 years. For the newly promoted team, it was a night to remember. As they manage to pull off such a huge victory over the Italian Giants, Milan.
Certainly, new Milan Boss, Massimilano Allegri needs to accept some of the blame of that shocking 2-nil defeat. The most formidable in the world attack failed to score a ‘single’ goal, which was a very disappointing show. Casena boss, Massimo Ficcadenti, set out his team with a sound tactical plan that Milan had no answer for. Casena allowed Red and Blacks to keep the possession in the majority time of the match. Along with that they did exceptionally well in not allowing Pato, Ronaldinho, Robinho and Ibrahimovic any space in attacking areas.
The shocking defeat against also showed that whilst Milan have one of the best attacking line-ups in the world but they are still lacking in other areas of the field. Overall, it was a very disappointing performance from the Italian Giants.
The whole A.C Milan defence line-up was a shambles. So often, a match winner performer for Milan Luca Antonini at the back was continually tormented by Cesans’s Ezequiel Schelotto. Once again, Daniele Bonera was a flop of the match, with such performance he once again showed that he cannot offer anything playing as the centre full back or even in the heart of the defence line-up.
Surely, Milan was missing their legendary defender Alessendro Nesta. That night witnessed one of the worst defence shows of Milan, a club which is renowned for its strong defending. Above all that, the worst performance at the defence line-up was from both the defenders. Nesta was surely being missed on the weekend. It is said that Thiago Silva doesn’t perform well when Nesta is not around him on the pitch. This was proved on Saturday night.. Due to his unsatisfactory performance, Thiago Silva was substituted by Granerro Gattuso.
However, the most concerning of all for Milan in defence was the disappointing performance of Sokratis. The 22-year-old is a highly rated young defender at San Siro. However, his defending against Cesena was nothing short of shambolic, as he was badly positioned for both of Cesena’s goal.
Due to his impressive performance, Sokratis Papastathopoulos was signed from Genao on 20 July 2010. It was quite a bad start for the youngster but Milan will be looking forward to him for some match-winning performance.
