Football Update: Premier League News – Torres’s injury and Doyle is happy at Wolves
It couldn’t get any better for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, when he came off the bench in the World Cup final. However, he pulled up an injury in extra time, when he was just chasing a ball. His side won the match and he was seen lying on the ground, withering in pain. Doctors have confirmed that the 26 year old has suffered from a left adductor injury and is set to undergo scans, when he reaches Madrid with his World Cup winning squad. Liverpool have issued a statement that the injury is not too severe.
Torres’s season in the premier league has been filled with injuries, and had a groin problem in December. The problem remained persistent, and he had to be operated twice on his right knee in 4 months. He therefore couldn’t find fitness, and his season ended early with Liverpool. He arrived in South Africa nursing the knee, and disappointed every time he played for his national side. He didn’t score a single goal, despite playing 7 matches in the World Cup. Torres has been strongly linked to Champions Chelsea as well as big spending Manchester City, after Liverpool’s debacle, when they finished 7th. After his injury, however, the potential employers of the 26 year old may well be put off, and his value from 70 million pounds has fallen to a mere 30 million pounds. He is therefore likely to stay at Liverpool, at least for this season, as he was seen with a Liverpool scarf around his shoulders while celebrating in the dressing room.
Liverpool is said to solidify their facilities, especially the sports science and sports medicine department. Two new physiotherapists have been employed. Liverpool club doctor who has worked for 17 years at Anfield has also been replaced by Zaf Iqbal, who formerly was with Tottenham Hotspurs. The club is also happy to confirm that John Moores University consultant has also joined the club, and would help improve the player’s development.
In other news, Wolverhampton Wanderers player Kevin Doyle is set to remain at his current club, with speculations that Arsenal is interested in signing the 26 year old. He stated that he is happy, and nothing has changed. He also added that it doesn’t mean, he doesn’t want to play at the highest level, but is content with his current employers and is enjoying every moment with it.
He claimed that it was a pleasure to play with the wanderers, and there is some perfect synergy between all the players. He was happy with the relation players had with each other as well as with the manager, and confessed that even though the pre-season is tough, it is still very enjoyable to play.
He admitted that he would have to up his game this season, following praises from Wolves last season. He stated that he has had good and bad spells over the last season and one needs to be right every time and find the top form. Only then can a player expect fans and players saying good things about him.
Doyle played as a forward in the club, and praised his side’s team work and consistency, the key reasons of the success in the top flight. He was humble enough to say that singling him out for the success would be unfair. He however added that had he been fit all of the season, his side would’ve finished in a better position than it did. He commended the formation the club played, stating that singling him out in attack perhaps highlighted his position and ability. This may have been the reason why many considered him as being the key player for his side, and admitted that other players may have been doing more than him, but have not gotten the same amount of praise. He however was vocal about the team work of his team, and said nothing could have been achieved without the work of every individual.
