Football Update: Premier league News- Newcastle United, Stoke City, Sunderland
Newcastle United
Newcastle United goalkeeper, Steve Harper was awestruck by the performance of Blackpool’s shotstopper Matt Gilks in their 2-0 loss to Blackpool at St James Park. The player stated that Pool’s goalkeeper was having one of those special days when everything seems to be going his way. The player added that that this is something that can happen every now and again and to anyone. However, Harper claimed that following the match, the entire dressing room was extremely disappointed by the performance. In the premier league, Harper claimed that goals can quickly change the course of games and whenever a team comes at St James Park, there is no room for error. A team shouldn’t be given anything they can hang on to and sadly, that is exactly what Newcastle United did. The Magpies gifted the visiting side with a penalty and that was something they managed to hang on to. Following that, Blackpool managed a goal on the counter attack towards the end of the match and the keeper claimed that it was disappointing day overall to lose in from of the loving home fans.
Stoke City
Stoke City manager, Tony Pulis has claimed that bringing so many players in the summer transfer window has undoubtedly added more goals to the squad but they still have to work hard on their defensive solidity. The Potters manager has successfully signed forwards in the form of Kenwyne Jones, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jonathan Walters as well as Real Zaragoza winger Jermaine Pennant and Portsmouth midfielder Marc Wilson. The manager claimed that bringing so many new players has given, as expected, a much needed lift to the place. The new players have given the side more options up front and to score goals, which has been the major worry for them for the previous seasons, but now have to make sure the club stays together as a team and as a unit.
Over the past two seasons in the top flight of English football, Stoke has managed 26 clean sheets and would to work super hard to make sure that they are able to maintain that. Adding new players have however given them much more quality and cutting edge up front needed to face tough sides. With the likes of Pennant and Gudjohnsen in the attack, Stoke is hoping that these players deliver the desired results. Wilson also has the ability to score goals from midfield, so the manager is hopeful that the new players would be able to add a bit more X factor to the side when they have possession. The manager claimed that even after these new players, the style of play wouldn’t change and still play to win. “Sometimes the reputation we have for a certain style is unfair but I'm not bringing the players in to change the style or reputation or curry favour with people outside who say we do this or that. I will always do it the way I think is right and how it suits this club," claimed manager, Tony Pulis
