Football Update: Premiere League News- Wigan beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0
Wigan completed a 2-0 win over 10 man Wolves side at Dw Staidum, Wolves remain firmly in the drop zone after just 5 points from 7 games. Wigan on the other hand have now moved into the top 10.
The first half had been a feisty affair, but most of the action took place in middle of the park. Both goalkeepers had been mere spectators. Wolves were cut down to 10 midway through the first half, but the home side failed to make use of the one man advantage.
The first half saw number of moves from both teams, but the final ball is something that neither of them could produce. Wigan did their best but Wolves hardly looked short on personnel even after Karl Henry’s early marching orders. The half ended at 0-0
but signs were there that 2nd half would be have some twists.
Moreover, they almost had the opener within minutes of the restart; Marcus Hahnemann made a fine save to deny Franco di Santo after a really good move from Wigan - though the Argentine, who was involved in a brilliant dummy earlier in the build-up, would
have been disappointed not to have produced a stronger finish from Hugo Radallega's cross.
Wigan had started to play much better, and looked like they had been sent out in the second half on a mission. James McCarthy was the latest to ping shot goal-wards after good work down the Wigan left, but Marcus Hahnemann was well behind it. Wolves boss
Mick McCarthy looked like he was already considering a substitution. Mick McCarthy did indeed act fast in this second half, and brought on defender George Elokobi on for striker Steven Fletcher.
There was another heated argument in the 2nd half, as Kevin Doyle and Antolin Alcaraz had words after the former caught the Wigan defender with a flailing arm.
The Wolves defence had to put a real shift in, as Wigan grew in confidence in attack. James McCarthy and Charles N'Zogbia, in particular, were causing plenty of problems.
It was time for a change for home side, but unlike Wolves who looked happy with a point away from home and with 10 men. Wigan made appositive change and brought on Ronnie Stam on for Maynor Figueroa. Wolves' resistance is broken.
As Wigan went on the attack, Charles N'Zogbia was brought down on the edge of the Wolves box and Jordi Gomez - the man so brutally fouled by Karl Henry earlier - stepped up to rip it into the top corner left-footed via a slight deflection. It was one of
the best free kicks one would ever see. It was flat, it was quick and the keeper had no chance. Wigan led at home for the first time this season.
The home side had the bit between their teeth after the goal. Franco di Santo - who had looked ineffective for most of the game - tried his luck from all of 30 yards with a dipping shot, and Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann just managed to steady himself
before palming it away. Wigan were still in control, Wolves had 12 or so minutes to get something out of the game.
Wolves finally rolled the dice, with forwards Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Marcus Bent thrown into the fray.
Soon after Mick McCarthy sent on his attacking players, Wigan all but sealed the match. Christophe Berra attempted to cut out Charles N'Zogbia's through-ball but succeeded only in kicking it straight at Hugo Rodallega who deflected it home for the Latics'
second.
It was game set and match, Wigan had finally won a match at home this season, and moved in to top half of Premier League table.
